Solon Relay For Life Raises $23K for Cancer Research and Counting

The event kicks off Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Solon's annual Relay for Life kicks off Friday evening at the Solon High School football stadium Friday evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The event is considered a celebration of all the funds raised for cancer research, and the group has much to celebrate.

So far volunteers have raised nearly $23,100 to help support cancer research, according to the Relay for Life website. That number may not reflect the total amount raised either.

The top participant so far has been Margaret Gonsalves, raising $2,905. The top team, KickerGG & The StrayCats, has raised $4,795.

So far the event has 20 teams and 185 participants.

The Survivor Lap, where those who have battled cancer and won are recognized and cheered around the track, kicks off the event at 6 p.m.

The Luminaria Ceremony, a powerful memorial to those who have and had cancer by lighting candles in bags with names of victims and survivors will be at 9 p.m.

The weather does not look promising, with the the chance of rain and chilly temperatures forecasted throughout night.
