School is back in session, and we want to honor all of your kids' accomplishments this year
We know there are kids out there doing great things, and we want to recognize them. With a new school year beginning, we know all those Solon kids will be accomplishing some great things. We want to recognize them on our occasional feature, Whiz Kid. So do you know a child who goes above and beyond to help those in need? How about a student who's constantly setting the bar higher day by day? Or maybe a youngster who's endured an amazing journey already in life? Our Whiz Kid donated money to the Solon police dog program and has a special drive to succeed
Whiz Kid of the Week: Jeffrey Lidawer Age: 13 School: Solon Middle School Outstanding Deeds: They are numerous: Jeffrey attended the Sea Cadet Boot Camp at Great Lakes in Chicago and was named the Honor Cadet; he donated a portion of his Bar Mitzvah money to the Solon Police Department so they could use it for their K9 officer, Stryker; and, last but not least, he gets straight A's and also runs cross country and track at school. Key to Awesomeness: From his mother, Cheryl Amato Lidawer: "His respect for others and the 'Jeffrey Drive' that is only special to himself ... He has a special drive that gives him a lot of confidence in his abilities and he shares that with those around him."

Reker, a solon resident is the top-ranked 6-year-old in the United States
Don't mess with Kathryn Reker. Kathryn, a 6-year-old Solon resident, won three gold medals and one bronze medal Tuesday at the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics in San Jose, CA. She trains at World Champion Martial Arts in Solon, where she has earned her first-degree black belt. She won gold medals in Forms, Sparring and Weapons and a bronze medal in Board Breaking. She competed in the 6 and 7 black-belt division. The victory is a big deal because USA Taekwondo is the governing body for the sport and part of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Winning at this level is a first step to the Olympic Games. Kathryn is going to Los Angeles next to compete in the America Taekwondo United National Championships, where she will defend her 2010 National …
