It's the second season for Solon's soccer, volleyball and cross country teams. The boys' soccer team and the volleyball team have already advanced to district competition next week while the cross country teams will run at their Division I district meets on Saturday. GIRLS SOCCER The Lady Comets are the third-seeded team in the Kent Division I district behind Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Hudson, the only two teams to beat them this season. Solon opens tournament action by hosting Kenston tomorrow at 3 p.m. A win in that match would advance the Lady Comets to a possible rematch with Hudson Tuesday night. Comet cross country teams gain state rankings
Solon's boys' and girls' cross country teams are ranked in the first state poll released this week while the Lady Comet girls' soccer team remains a member of the prestigious ESPN Fab 50. CROSS COUNTRY Solon's boys' cross country team is ranked ninth among Ohio's Division I teams this week. The Comets are coming off a victory at the McDonough Invitational in Cleveland Heights, edging runner-up St. Francis by a score of 50-51. Kevin Blank led Solon with a third-place overall finish in a time of 17:06. He was followed across the finish line by teammates Dan Urbanek (seventh - 17:17), Jonathan Wainblat (eighth - 17:25), Max Haiss (11th - 17:34) and Ethan Wise (21st - 17:56). Solon bested Mentor 167-169 as Rudary carded a round of even-par 35. Anthony Stames added a 42, Justin Razzante shot 45 and Eric Rudary aided the cause with a 46. Rudary topped that effort with a round of one-under par 34 in a 156-161 win over Nordonia. Stames also broke 40 as he shot a 39 while Razzante finished at 41 and Sam Littman posted a 42. And since Solon has lots of talented athletes still competing in their respective sports, we wanted to get the word out about their games, contests, matches and meets going on this weekend. WRESTLING The Comets’ Brandon Thompson, Anthony Collica and Nate Hoff begin their state tournament competition in Columbus this afternoon during the annual Ohio Championships held at the Value City Arena in Columbus. SWIMMING AND DIVING The Comets have a large delegation of swimmers and divers at this weekend’s Division I State Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Diver Taylor Epstein finished 15th overall in Thursday’s diving competition with a total of 389.35 points. Solon’s boys who will compete in the swimming events include: Ryan Carson, Alex Polishchuk, Dan Telljohann, Killian Wagner, Jamie Gallagher, Dan McMahon, and Tristan Wagner. Michael Kreft is defending his championship in the boys’ diving competition. The Comets have several ladies in the swimming events with Kelsey McRill, Francesca Viotti, Katherine Taylor, Annie Marquiss and Anna Wong. Kreft will compete at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Canton.
