Wood County officials say a witness' observations may point to a vehicle breakdown as a cause in the crash that killed Maliyah and Malaka Jones, but they may never know for sure
A witness who saw the crash last week that killed a mother and daughter from Solon gave investigators information that indicates the victims' car may have broken down, according to the Marietta Times. Maliyah Jones, 11, and her mother, 38-year-old Malaka Jones, both of Solon, were killed April 18 when a tanker truck struck their stationary car on U.S. 77 on the bridge crossing the Ohio River at the border with West Virginia. Also killed was Sherita Hogans, 29, of Cleveland. Maliyah Jones was a fifth-grade student at Orchard Middle School. Sgt. The Solon residents and a Cleveland woman were confirmed as the victims of a horrific I-77 crash on Monday, according to multiple media outlets
Officials in Wood County, West Virginia, confirmed today that Maliyah and Malaka Jones, of Solon, were both killed in a horrific crash Monday on Interstate 77, acording to the Parkersburg News & Sentinel. Also killed in the crash was Sherita Hogans, 29, of Cleveland, Wood County Sheriff Jeff Sandy told the newspaper. Solon schools officials announced earlier this week that Maliyah, an 11-year-old fifth grader at Orchard Middle School, and her mother, a 38-year-old Solon woman, were both killed in an car crash. Wood County officials had said at the time they believed the victims of Monday's crash were from Solon, but wanted to wait until an autopsy was complete to confirm it.

A tragic accident in Solon has many children dealing with death and grief, perhaps for the first time
Solon is dealing with a tragedy right now. Worst of all, it involves children. Many residents and their children have already learned that an Orchard Middle School fifth-grader – Maliyah Jones – and her mother, Malaka Jones, were killed in a car crash Monday. This is one of the most difficult things a parent can deal with: How do you explain to your child what death is? How do you help them cope with the grief and loss that they might not even completely understand? In a letter to parents, school officials say that Maliyah Jones, a 5th-grader at Orchard Middle School, and her mother died in a tragic car accident
UPDATE 1:57 P.M. WEDNESDAY: Counselors and staff at a number of Solon schools are helping students deal with the death Monday of fifth grader Maliyah Jones. Schools spokeswoman Tammy Strom said that counselors and staff at Orchard Middle School -- where Maliyah went to school -- and Parkside Elementary and Solon High schools -- where Maliyah's siblings attend -- will have an open-door policy for anyone who needs to talk or reassurance in their time of grief.
