Solon Middle School Student Wins Civil Rights Writing Contest

Anirudh Vijayshankar of Solon won for writing in the eighth grade category

An eighth grader at Solon Middle School was honored recently for winning the Ohio Civil Rights Commission's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Writing & Multimedia Contest. Anirudh Vijayshankar of Solon won for writing in the eighth grade category. The goal was to write an essay inspired by Martin Luther King Junior's speech about the "Drum Major Instinct" (You can listen to the speech here. and then answer this question: How would you serve as a drum major for peace, justice & righteousness in your school? In Honor Of Son, Rep. Anielski Championed New Suicide Prevention Law

Governor John Kasich recently signed into law a suicide prevention bill aimed at helping school districts provide help to troubled teens.

A youth suicide awareness and prevention bill signed into law by Gov. John Kasich was championed by Solon's representative in the state house. Rep. Marlene Anielski, a Republican who represents Solon, attended Governor Kasich’s signing of House Bill 543, a law geared toward training teachers and school staff members in youth suicide awareness and prevention. Designated the “Jason Flatt Act, Ohio, in honor of Joseph Anielski,” House Bill 543 requires public schools, as well as community (charter) schools and science, technology, engineering and math schools to train teachers and staff in areas regarding suicide prevention. Anthony Fossaceca After Defeat: 'I Do Not Intend To Go Away'

Anthony Fossaceca, who was defeated by Rep. Marlene Anielski for the 6th Ohio House District seat, thanked supporters and says he will be back.

Anthony Fossaceca, who was defeated by Rep. Marlene Anielski for the 6th Ohio House District seat, thanked supporters and says he will be back. Anielski, the incumbent Republican, collected 32,594 votes against Democratic challenger Fossaceca, who collected 26,112 votes, according to unofficial results. But Fossaceca was the pick in Solon, where he collected more votes than Anielski. In a message posted on his campaign's Facebook page, Fossaceca said he is proud of the campaign he ran. He said he was excited to win Solon that he won the vote in Solon, the largest city in the district, and Lyndhurst, where he grew up. Evan Koppel: Father of the Year

Evan Koppel, a Solon resident named Father of the Year in Northeast Ohio, was honored by Ohio Rep. Marlene Anielski.

State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) recently presented a House commendation to Evan Koppel for being awarded Father of the Year among several Northeast Ohio fathers.  Rep. Anielski met with Evan at his work, where he is a regional sales director for the Great Lakes Region at United Airlines. Evan and his wife Julie reside in Solon and are the proud parents of Benjamin (age 14), Adam (age 12) and Rebecca (age 6). Being part of United Airlines for more than 22 years, Evan enjoys sharing his love of adventure with his kids by taking them on one-on-one travels to be able to spend quality time together on trips such as Alaska, Maine, and Ireland. “I was proud to have a chance to meet Mr. Koppel,” Rep Anielski said.  “He is a …
