Sharpshooters are culling deer in Solon until they reach 200 killed.
Deer culling is underway in Solon as sharpshooters work to thin the herd. Since mid-January, more than 130 deer have been culled by sharpshooters with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reports the Solon Times. This is the second year that the USDA has been hired to run Solon's sharpshooting efforts. The goal of the program is to slash Solon's deer population to reduce car wrecks caused by deer. Solon officials have said Solon has more deer than the city's geography can handle. The program is controversial, as many residents tried to stop the city from being able to hunt deer. Last year, snipers culled 300 deer from the city. The target this year is 200. In 2012, the city spent $183,353, or about $611 per deer culled. That total cost …

Dave Hromco will continue to manage Solon's deer culling program for another year under a proposed contract.
The city wants to bring David Hromco back for another year to coordinate its deer culling program Hromco, who oversaw the program last winter, will earn $40 an hour. He can only work 200 hours, according to the proposed contract, which would max out his pay at $8,000. The contract will be voted on by city council at its meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight. Hromco will continue to have access to a city cell phone and a city vehicle. The city brought in Hromco, a retied assistant public works director for the city who had managed previous deer culling programs for the city, after former Public Works Commissioner Jim Stanek retired at the New Year. Hromco oversees the program for the city, but the culling itself was performed by the U.S…

The summary report of Solon's deer culling efforts recommends that Solon should continue a sharpshooting program into the future.
There's no better way to control the deer population than culling, so the city should continue a sharpshooting program into the future, recommends a summary report Solon's deer program. "At the time of this writing it does not appear that any new, practical, techniques for deer management will be available to the city in any immediate time frame," writes David Hromco, who administered the deer program for the city. "Althught continuing the program in the future can only be done at the direction of the Mayor and Council, it is the consensus and recommendation of those that monitored and administered the project to continue the program using sharp-shooting methods," he adds. Hromco recommends the city to enter into a multi-year agreement …

Jim Stanek is expected to ask Solon City Council on Wednesday for permissions to secure the U.S. Department of Agriculture to handle deer culling if the city decides to do that
Solon Public Works Commissioner Jim Stanek will ask City Council Wednesday for authorization to secure the services of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to handle deer culling if the city decides to start again. In a memo to Mayor Susan Drucker and city council, Stanek said the proposed contract has been reviewed by the law director and that it's necessary to move forward so that Solon's deer culling needs can be included in the USDA's schedule. He's asking city council to authorize him to move forward. The next council meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Whether Solon decides to cull deer again will depend on city council, which has the final say. "I feel it important to take this action so that I can continue to prepare for a …
