Comets begins title quest with convincing win over the Bulldogs
Solon senior lacrosse player Chris Humphrey clearly knows how to make a grand entrance. Returning from a right ankle injury at the end of April, Humphrey had seven goals and one assist as the Comets reduced their opening-round playoff contest to a mere exhibition, smashing Green, 26-5, at home on Saturday. Solon (10-4) scored more than 20 goals for the first time this season and produced its most lopsided margin of victory on the year as the Comets began play in the Ohio High School Lacrosse Association’s Division I Tournament. Solon awaits the winner of Massillon-Jackson vs. North Canton-Hoover for a Wednesday home tilt at 7:30 p.m. Solon defeated Jackson, 16-9, on April 29, but lost to Hoover, 13-12, on April 15. With four athletes heading off on Division 1 athletic scholarships next year, Solon Football Coach Jim McQuaide said recruiting ain't what it used to be
Once upon a time, back in the prehistoric days before ESPN, college football coaches got in their cars and drove across the state and across the country looking for the top high school talent. The best recruiters were people like Woody Hayes, who would sit down at a dinner table and tell parents their son would be treated like family at Ohio State. Or people like Bear Bryant, whose mere presence in a home overwhelmed both players and families. Recruiting has come a long way. Wednesday’s National Signing Day (not a holiday…yet) got 12 hours of coverage on ESPNU. It has become nearly as big as the NFL Draft, with high school seniors finally revealing where they will take their talents. Solon has one of the best big school programs in the …

My guess is that few of those games had 20 plus goal differentials. The point is that running up the score on an opponent that is clearly outclassed shows a lack of respect for sportsmanship and fair play. There just seems to be a blind spot on this especially in lax. This year I've see a coach exhort his team to "go for one more " prior to a face off with less than 30 seconds left and the score …   more ›
