Local Business Owner Outsmarts Scammers

The information in this report is from the Solon Police.

A Solon business owner didn't fall for a phone scam trying to bilk the business for hundreds of dollars, according to Solon Police. On Jan. 24, D & R Bagels on Aurora Road received a call from someone claiming to be from the Illuminating Company who said that the business's electric bill. The caller threatened that the business would have its electricity shut off if the bill wasn't paid by 1:30 p.m. that day. The business owner said they talked to two different men on the phone, both with "strong accents," according to the police report. The businesses owner was wise to the scam, and knew they were current on the bill. They called the energy company and were told their account was fine and that the callers were scammers.

Another scam people should be aware of is the fake DEA scam call. This involves impersonating a police officer and based on the complaints posted at http://www.callercenter.com , the scammers call victims who may have previously purchased drugs over the internet and identify themselves as DEA agents.
