Solon Seeks Grant To Improve Busy SOM Center and Aurora Roads Intersection

One of Solon's busiest intersections may be widened if the city can secure state funding.

Improvements may be coming to one of Solon's busiest intersections if the city can secure state money to help pay for it. The intersection in question, where SOM Center Road meets Aurora Road, is one of Solon's busiest. The still preliminary plan would be to widen the east side of SOM Center Road in front of the Solar Shopping Center. Now the city wants to apply for state safety funding to overhaul the intersection by making it wider. The public works commission voted to draft legislation to send to city council giving city staff approval to apply for the grant. The Ohio Department of Transportation identified the intersection as "a high crash location" back in 2007. The city has taken steps since then to improve the road safety in the …

Solon Police Reveal Location of Saturday's Drunk Driving Checkpoint

Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint tonight on Aurora Road between Solon Road and Solon Boulevard

Solon Police will conduct a drunk driving checkpoint tonight on Aurora Road in an effort to discourage drinking and driving this holiday weekend. The checkpoint will be located between Solon Road and Solon Boulevard, police announced today in a news release. Lt. Bruce Felton, a police spokesman, said the police follow rules in regard to running checkpoints, which include public announcements and random stops -- such as every third car that passes through the blockade. Instead of drinking and driving, use a designated driver, call a cab or a family member or stay in a motel. Another idea suggested by police: If you must drink, do it in your own home. Stay tuned to Solon Patch next week for results from the checkpoint.

Solon Police Plan Drunk Driving Checkpoint Saturday Night

The checkpoint is part of an national campaign to catch drunk drivers

The Solon Police Department will conduct a drunk driving checkpoint Saturday night on Aurora Road. The Solon Police Department uses both sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols to stamp out drunk driving.  At checkpoints, officers stop vehicles in a predetermined sequence (such as every third car) to evaluate drivers for indications of alcohol or drug …
