Solon Swim Club to Host USA Summer Sectionals

Stars will come out for USA Summer Sectionals hosted by Solon swim club

The Solon Stars swim club was slated to host the prestigious USA Swimming Summer Speedo Championship Series Sectionals in 2012, but when Michigan could not hold the 2011 event, the Stars came to the rescue. The Solon club, under the direction of Mike Davidson, will host the meet July 21-24 at the Cleveland State University natatorium. And it will be no small feat to run the event, which will draw between 550 and 700 swimmers from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Not to mention one swimmer who will be coming all the way from Mexico. "Normally this is planned a year or a year and a half in advance," said Davidson, in his ninth year as head coach of the Stars. Annie Marquiss Takes Swimming Skills and Smarts to Miami of Ohio

Solon's Marquiss to continue swimming career at Miami of Ohio

Solon swimming coach Mike Davidson doesn't mince words when he talks about Annie Marquiss. "She is one of the best female athletes ever to come through our club and high school programs," said Davidson. "I've coached her since she was 10 years old and even at that point I knew she was special." So special that Marquiss signed a national letter of intent this week to swim for Miami of Ohio. The Comet senior is a four-time state qualifier and All-Ohio swimmer and is a member of two of Solon's school record relay teams. The sprint specialist is also a standout student and will take her 4.3 GPA into a pre-med program at Miami. "I've always liked the doctor shows on TV," said Marquiss. WRESTLING Solon had three weight class champs at the Northeast Ohio Conference Meet as Brandon Thompson, Anthony Collica and Nathan Hoff captured titles. Thompson won the 103-pound class with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Mayfield’s Mike Carlone, Collica rolled to a 13-2 decision over Armando Torres of Elyria and Hoff captured the heavyweight title with a pin at the 2:18 mark against Derek Rhodes of Cuyahoga Falls. WRESTLING The Comets will be one of the teams to beat in this weekend’s Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division championships to be contested at Garfield Heights High School. Action gets underway at 4 p.m. today and the finals will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Solon finished the dual meet portion of the season with a 4-1 mark, one match behind Elyria. SWIMMING AND DIVING Solon senior Annie Marquiss had an outstanding meet at the Northeast Ohio Conference Championships held at Cleveland State on Saturday as she set two meet records. Marquiss, who placed 14th in the state in the 50 freestyle last year, won both the 50 freestyle (24.59) and the 100 freestyle (53.56) at the NOC meet. Her time in the 100 free broke the record set in 2008 by another Comet swimmer, Gretchen Hestley. Solon’s ladies also won the 200 free relay with the team of Kelsey McRill, …
