Stewart Field Getting New Turf

The all-purpose field at Solon High's Stewart Field is getting a new, more advanced type of FieldTurf installed this summer.

Solon's athletes and musicians will have a new field to compete on next school year. The artificial turf at Stewart Field will be replaced this summer with a new version of FieldTurf that uses more advanced technology and is expected to last much longer, said Fred Bolden, Solon Schools' director of personnel and transportation. The existing field has been around for nine years and has been used extensively for a variety of sports and other events, including football, soccer, lacrosse, marching band and many others. Bolden said the field has held more than 150 events each year. And now the field is beginning to show extensive wear and tear. Solon Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

Four student-athletes signed letters of intention to play at colleges in Ohio, Oklahoma, New York and Arizona

Four Solon High School athletes decided on their collegiate destinations Wednesday and let family, friends and coaches witness part of the process. For National Letter of Intent Day, the students made their choices official by signing their letters in an assembly hosted in the atrium. Here are the athletes and where they will be attending college in 2013: "They've already won two state titles, and they both won 124 matches," Solon Wrestling coach Tony DiGiovani said. "These two guys are Solon Wrestling for the past three years ... They're the leaders in our room, they're the leaders when we go places. "They're the people that people come to watch." Comets For the Cure: Solon Supports Breast Cancer Research This Week

Solon High will use school spirit and sports to raise money for breast cancer research.

Solon High will add pink to its school colors this week. The school will unite behind school spirit and sports next week for "Comets For the Cure," an effort to raise awareness and money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leading foundation in the fight against breast cancer. Students will be selling pink T-shirt with the "Comets for the Cure" logo on them. The $15 shirts will gain students admittance into four Solon home games that will feature pink- and cure-themed entertainment. Those games are: The Solon Volleyball team has hosted a "Volley For the Cure" event for years.  School officials love that idea, but thought it would be a good idea to do expand it school wide and unite all of the students and athletes in a good cause. The Solon Sports Recap is a weekly look at Solon High School sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports coverage you need. Solon's Dave Rudary is playing his best golf of the season as the Comet senior shot three superb rounds in three victories this week.  Solon bested Mentor 167-169 as Rudary carded a round of even-par 35. Anthony Stames added a 42, Justin Razzante shot 45 and Eric Rudary aided the cause with a 46. Rudary topped that effort with a round of one-under par 34 in a 156-161 win over Nordonia. Stames also broke 40 as he shot a 39 while Razzante finished at 41 and Sam Littman posted a 42. Rudary, averaging 39 strokes …

Solon Fall Sports Teams Off to Strong Starts

Girls' tennis team captures Medina Doubles Tournament

Solon's fall sports teams are off to fast starts to the new season with strong performances from the girls' and boys' golf teams and an early season tournament triumph from the girls' tennis team. Girls' Tennis Solon captured the top spot in the Medina Doubles Tournament Saturday, finishing with a team total of 29 points to edge CVCA (27 points) for first place. The Lady Comets got first places from the second doubles team of Daisy Chung and Danielle Pivovar (6-0, 6-4), the third doubles team of Hailey Baird and Lisa Guo (6-2, 7-5) and the fourth doubles team of Monika Bandi and Alana Fayman (6-4, 6-4). The first doubles team of Tinisee Kandakai and Jamie Marks took a fourth place after a tough 7-6, 6-2 setback in the consolation finals. …
