Stellar pitching, late rally propel Comets past Brecksville-Broadview Heights, 6-0.
The Solon Comets softball team has moved one game closer to its goal of the state championship. On Wednesday the girls shut out the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees 6-0, thanks to an amazing pitching performance from Sarah Maxson. Maxson held the Bees to only one hit and walked two in the shutout. Kristen Confroy had her second straight game with a home run to put Solon up two runs in the fourth inning. The bats got going for the Comets in the seventh inning, putting four runs on the board and insuring the victory. Solon moves into the regional semifinals against Mentor, who beat Painesville 3-1. The game is at the University of Akron on Thursday, May 30 at 5 p.m.

A big fifth inning helped the Comets streak by Garfield Heights, 10-3.
The Solon Comets softball team scored seven runs in the fifth inning on their way to beating Garfield Heights in the district semifinals on Tuesday night, 10-3. Solon's Kristen Confroy had a lead off home run to start the game and two doubles to lead the Comets in batting. Sarah Maxson pitched a complete game for Solon, holding Garfield Heights scoreless in the last four innings. The Comets will advance to the district championship game where they will face Brecksville-Broadview Heights, who beat Shaker Heights 10-0 in five innings Tuesday. The national competition is May 17-18, 2013.
President Barack Obama has applaued their talents and now this week, the Solon High School and Solon Middle School Science Olympiad teams will defend their national championships. It was the fifth consecutive national championship for the middle school team and the second in a row for the high school squad last year. The nationals are at Wright State University May 17-18. The team earned the right to go to nationals after winning the state competition in April at The Ohio State University. A week prior to that win, the teams traveled to Washington D.C. where the president honored them. A Solon High School sophomore is among the 10 finalists for their essays to stop hatred, as part of the 5th annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! contest. Solon High seniors celebrated college decision day by declaring their college choices in an annual tradition.
Solon High School is celebrated the academic achievement of the members of the senior class with a special College Signing Day, culminating the years of work students have put in to meet their post-high school goals. May 1 is the traditional national “decision day” when students need to make a commitment to a college or university by placing a non-refundable deposit. In the tradition of this day, the Solon senior class of 2013 announced its college choices. Fashioned after the popular signing days when high school athletes sign letters of intent to colleges and universities for athletics, the Academic Signing Day allows Solon seniors to have their photo taken while signing a certificate indicating where they will attend college. Solon High School’s ninth grade chess team captured fifth place honors at the U.S. Chess Federation’s SuperNationals V chess tournament earlier this month.
Solon High School’s ninth grade chess team captured fifth place honors at the U.S. Chess Federation’s SuperNationals V chess tournament earlier this month. "While testing their skills against some of the top chess players in the nation, this SHS team of ninth graders represented Solon High School, the school district and the state of Ohio well by finishing fifth in the nation in the K-9 championship section," said Solon chess coach Tony Dunlap. Team members Joel Jaffe, Daniel Guo, Lawrence Liu, John Xiang, Alan Stepanski and Antony Styrt made up one of the 1,565 teams from 49 states and Puerto Rico competing in the 2013 SuperNationals V tournament. Find out where Solon High School ranked in the annual list of best high schools prepared by U.S. News and World Report.
Solon High School is the 13th best high school in Ohio and the 364rd best in the country, according to the annual rankings prepared by U.S. News & World Report. There are 242 public schools in Ohio. Last year, the high school ranked 11th in the state and 283rd overall. Solon received the gold medal and was praised for the high participation rate in Advanced Placement courses. Students are also 99 percent proficient in reading and 98 percent proficient in math, according to the magazine. These figures are the same as in 2012. Aditya Nair was named a Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalist.
A Solon High School student has been selected as a Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalist, and is one step away from potentially becoming one of this year's 141 honored scholars. Aditya Nair was named a semi-finalist. Four students from Solon High, and another Solon resident who attends University School were candidates but did not advance to the semi-final round. They are Rohan K. Achar, Stephen H. Tang, Thomas Y. Yi and Carlson Zou. The scholar candidates students were picked from a pool of thousands of students across the U.S. named as candidates in the annual Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation's highest honors for graduating seniors.
