Solon Softball Celebrates Senior Players At Final Home Game

The Solon Lady Comets softball team celebrated its seniors but lost 2-1 to rival Mentor.

The Solon High School Lady Comets softball team lost to the visiting Mentor Cardinals 2-1 in a game that came down to the last inning. The Comets fall to 16-7 on the season. Solon's only run came on a booming home run from shortstop Kristen Confroy in the third inning. Solon had a chance to tie the game with a runner on second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. But Mentor was able to end the game on a double play after the Cardinals shortstop caught a line drive and was able to tag out the Solon baserunner. Before the game the Comets honored their four senior players: Morgan Gersey, Heather Halleen, Gabby Lucarelli and Carly Simecek. Stewart Field Getting New Turf

The all-purpose field at Solon High's Stewart Field is getting a new, more advanced type of FieldTurf installed this summer.

Solon's athletes and musicians will have a new field to compete on next school year. The artificial turf at Stewart Field will be replaced this summer with a new version of FieldTurf that uses more advanced technology and is expected to last much longer, said Fred Bolden, Solon Schools' director of personnel and transportation. The existing field has been around for nine years and has been used extensively for a variety of sports and other events, including football, soccer, lacrosse, marching band and many others. Bolden said the field has held more than 150 events each year. And now the field is beginning to show extensive wear and tear. He said the existing field is FieldTurf, but this new kind is a more advanced type and is a very-high…

Brandon Thompson, Anthony Collica Win State Championships

Solon wrestlers Brandon Thompson and Anthony Collica both won their third state championships Saturday.

Solon wrestlers Anthony Collica and Brandon Thompson each won a state championship on Saturday in Columbus. Collica defeated Markus Scheidel of Lakewood's St. Edward in the 152-pound championship match. Thompson won against Artem Timchenko of Olentangy Orange in the 120-pound championship. Both wrestlers won their matches by a 3-1 decision. Two of the greatest wrestlers in Solon history, Collica and Thompson brought home their third state championship. Congratulations Comets!

Solon's Anthony Collica, Brandon Thompson Wrestle Today For State Championships

Solon wrestling stars Anthony Collica and Brandon Thompson will wrestling in the state championship matches in their weight classes on Saturday.

Solon wrestlers Anthony Collica and Brandon Thompson will each grapple for their another state championship today. Collica will wrestle Markus Scheidel of Lakewood's St. Edward in the 152-pound championship match. Thompson will take on Artem Timchenko of Olentangy Orange in the 120-pound championship. Two of the greatest wrestlers in Solon history, Collica and Thompson will try to bring home their third state championship. Solon High Bowler Advances To State Tournament

Congrats to Solon senior Brandon Mattingly for advancing to the state tournament in bowling.

Solon High School senior Brandon Mattingly has advanced to the State Tournament this weekend in Columbus. Mattingly finished fifth out of all the bowlers competing at the district tournament, and second out of the individual qualifiers. He is the 3rd bowler to advance to the State tournament since bowling became a sport at Solon High School in 2008. He bowled a 240, 182, and a 256 with a 678 Series. The state tournament will be played in Columbus on March 2. Senior Gabe Cohn bowled a 222, and Senior Andrew Quandt bowled a 220. The team placed 18th out of 28 teams at the District Tournament. Good luck Brandon and congratulations to a great season for all of the bowling teams!

Solon Swimmers, Divers Excel At State Meet

Diver Sivan Mills finished fifth and 11 swimmers recieved All-Ohio honors.

The Solon Comet swimmers and divers performed well at the State Meet this weekend. Four-time state qualifier, Sivan Mills, finished in 5th place at the Division 1 Girls OHSAA State Meet on Thursday. In swimming, six Solon girls and five boy swimmers earned All-Ohio in 8 events. Earning All-Ohio honors for the girl's team were: Anna Wong, Aurelia Sweeney, Allison Hoffman, Becca Hoffman, Jessica Jin and Halle Immormino. Earning all-state recognition for the boys were: Ryan Carson, Christopher Guo, Grant Pinchot, Patrick Tippen and Mark Lippert. Diver Mills was in second place after both the preliminary and semifinal rounds, but the margin separating the top six divers was razor close. Sivan, scored high marks on her final round dives and …

Solon Hockey Wins Baron Cup II For First Time In School History

The Comets defeated Amherst, Kent and Orange on the way to the school's first Baron Cup II championship.

The Solon Comets are the Baron Cup II Champions for the first time in school history. The Comets won the cup by defeating Orange 6-5 on Sunday night in an overtime thriller when Ben Peterson scored the winning goal. Also scoring for Solon was Zach Mandry and Sam Littman with two goals each. Jake Pierce also added a goal. The eighth-seeded Comets were underdogs the whole way through the tournament. They defeated top-seeded Amherst, fourth-seeded Kent and second-seeded Orange to win the cup. Sam Littman was awarded the tournament Vince Locastro Sportsmanship Award. Congrats Comets!

2013 Solon Football Schedule Released: Comets To Face Five New Teams Next Season

The Solon Comets football team will play an old rival in the 2013 season as the schedule gets overhauled.

The 2013 Solon Football schedule has been completed and features some significant changes, with the Comets preparing to face five different teams than last year. Starting with the non-conference portion of the schedule, Solon will rekindle a long rivalry with Kenston and begin a two-year stint with Willoughby South. The Comets will also play Valley Forge, Mayfield and Hudson, all new to the schedule next season. Solon will still play rivals Twinsburg and Mentor along with other Valley Division opponents Strongsville and Brunswick. Glenville also remains on the schedule from last season. Solon's Sivan Mills Wins Diving Competition

Solon Divers Hit the Boards of the Canton Christmas Invitational while the Swimmers Competed in the Viking Invitational.

Editor's Note: The information in this post was provided by swimming/diving parent Estelle Mills. Solon High's swimmers and divers were in action this weekend and both performed well. The Solon High School Diving Team Headed down to Canton on Saturday December 15th to compete in the Christmas Invitational at the CT Branin Natatoruim in Canton.  The Lady Comet Divers competed in morning followed by the Boys Diving Team in the afternoon. Sivan Mills of the Lady Comets finished in first place in field of 34 divers, 49 points ahead of her nearest competitor.  The Lady Comets also finished with 2 other divers in the top ten.
