Solon’s two national champion Science Olympiad teams were honored Monday by President Barack Obama at the third annual White House Science Fair. The event highlighted the achievements of student winners from major national science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions. At least one of Solon’s Science Olympiad teams has been invited to each of the White House Science Fairs. Traveling to Washington for today’s event are Solon High School senior Stephanie Zhu and freshman Achuth Nair. Stephanie is representing the SHS team and Achuth is representing the SMS team. Solon Schools paid tribute to its national champion Science Olympiad teams, giving the seniors a fitting sendoff and challenging the younger students to continue excelling. The teams from the Solon High School and Solon Middle School each won the national championship this year, the latest in a string of victories that is turning Solon's Science Olympiad program into a dynasty. It's the fifth consecutive national championship for the middle school team and the second in a row for the high school squad. "You bring national honors to our school district," said Superintendent Joe Regano. "We are so very proud of each of you." Seniors on the Solon High School Science Olympiad team missed their prom, but they finished their high school careers as back-to-back national champions.
The Seniors on the Solon High School Science Olympiad teams had to miss their Prom, but that didn't stop them from celebrating. The seniors dressed up in formal wear -- with the guys sporting stylish pink ties -- and posed for pictures. And according to the Plain Dealer, a team member's mother made corsages and boutonnieres for the seniors on the team. We'd like to take a moment to recognize those seniors who have worked so hard, and given up their Prom, and used their talents to excel at the highest level. Congrats!

The Solon Middle School Science Olympiad team successfully defended their national title last Saturday at the National Science Olympiad tournament at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The team completed their fourth undefeated season in a row with a victory by 62 points over second place Marie Murphy out of the Chicago area. Winning their events were: Second place was awarded: Winning third place were: Placing fourth was Chris Guo & Emily Wang in Awesome Aquifer; placing fifth was Lois Wu & Grace Xu in Food Science; and placing sixth were Dorothy Chan & David Geng in Bottle Rockets. The Solon High School and Middle School Science Olympiad won this state championships last weekend. The teams were defending their national and state championships from last year. The middle school team took first place in eight of 25 events, including anatomy and physiology, remote sensing and robot arm. The team had a score of 68 (the lower the better in science olympiad).
