Local Business Taken Advantage Of By Phone Scammers

A Solon-based dry cleaning business lost nearly $1,000 after the owner fell for a phone scam, according to Solon Police. Nite-N-Day Cleaners on Aurora Road eceived a call from someone claiming to be a representative of First Energy. The person on the phone said that the business was late on its electric bill and that it must pay $957.88 to keep the lights on. The scammer told the owner, a 44-year-old man, that he should pay the bill using prepaid cards. The owner did what the scammer said and later contacted First Energy and learned he had been scammed. Detectives are investigating. It's not the first time such a scam has happened in recent weeks to a Solon business. D & R Bagels on Aurora Road received a similar call, but the business did…

I feel terrible for those who become victims to phone scams. I have read several complaints posted at http://www.callercenter.com about how scheming the scammers are and I don't think the victims should be blamed for falling for it. It should be the scammers. They should be put to jail.   more ›

Local Business Owner Outsmarts Scammers

A Solon business owner didn't fall for a phone scam trying to bilk the business for hundreds of dollars, according to Solon Police. On Jan. 24, D & R Bagels on Aurora Road received a call from someone claiming to be from the Illuminating Company who said that the business's electric bill. The caller threatened that the business would have its electricity shut off if the bill wasn't paid by 1:30 p.m. that day. The business owner said they talked to two different men on the phone, both with "strong accents," according to the police report. The businesses owner was wise to the scam, and knew they were current on the bill. They called the energy company and were told their account was fine and that the callers were scammers.

Another scam people should be aware of is the fake DEA scam call. This involves impersonating a police officer and based on the complaints posted at http://www.callercenter.com , the scammers call victims who may have previously purchased drugs over the internet and identify themselves as DEA agents.
