Solon Fire Chief Bill Shaw said the storm could have been much worse, but city officials were prepared.
Solon is dealing with some downed power lines, fallen trees and some limited access on a handful of roads in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, said Fire Chief Bill Shaw. Bainbridge Road near Solon Road is down to one lane and traffic is slow on Aurora Road near Carrington Court because of some low-hanging power lines. All traffic lights are functioning properly. Shaw said the city is dealing with typical damage, including trees down across the city and some power issues. Shaw said the city initiated some of its disaster plans, but did not have to fully use them. "I’ve been through worse, we were epecting worse, we are happy we didn't have worse," he said. CAUTION: Shaw said that as people start going outside to check on any damage, to stay…

Power outages are expected across Northeast Ohio due to strong winds from Hurricane Sandy.
Thousands of customers who have lost power in Northeast Ohio could remain without power until tomorrow afternoon, according to FirstEnergy. Most of the outages are in Cleveland and inner ring suburbs such as Cleveland Heights. As of 11 p.m. Oct. 29, Solon had about than 160 power outages. Spokesperson Mark Durbin said that these outages are generally due to high winds brought on by Hurricane Sandy, but added that crews are in a tough spot when it comes to repairs. "We are currently in a situation where, until the wind stops blowing, we’re not going to have a good handle on restoration time," he said. "If crews can safely make a repair we will do that, but we’re not esending crews up in bucket in 60-mile-per-hour winds." Some repairs can be…

People lost power when the storms hit about an hour ago, more reports may come in
About 12,000 people in several cities in Northeast Ohio lost their power this morning after storms hit the area. About 100 people are out in Cleveland Heights, 650 in Shaker Heights, 55 in Beachwood, less than 500 in Mayfield Heights and between 500 and 2,000 in Solon, said Mark Durbin, spokesperson for FirstEnergy. That number could increase as people come home and discover they have no power, he said. Though he did not know the exact cause of all the outages, he said most likely the wind took out limbs and trees, which damaged FirstEnergy's equipment, or strong winds took down power sources. Durbin said the company hopes to have a majority of the outages restored by this evening, but that could change if storms continue to move …
