The Solon School board appointed an interim principal at Parkside Elementary to replace the late Martha Keeney.
An assistant principal at Solon High School has been appointed to serve as interim principal at Parkside Elementary after the death of Martha Keeney. Erica Kosiorek was appointed to that role at Monday's Solon School Board meeting. "I know she’ll do an outstanding job," said Superintendent Joe Regano, who informed the staff at Parkside on Monday that Kosiorek would be taking over. "I think it's going to be an excellent fit." Kosiorek will be at Parkside full time after winter break, and will use the time until then to prepare herself, Regano said. The school board also approved a supplemental contract for Patricia Petrie for administrative assistant duties at Parkside. Regano said Petrie has done an outstanding job helping out at Parkside …

Superintendent Joe Regano said the half day will allow people associated with Parkside Elementary to attend Martha Keeney's funeral.
Parkside Elementary will have a half-day of school on Friday so people associated with the school can attend Martha Keeney's funeral service. Superintendent Joe Regano announced the decision in a note to parents: The loss of a principal is unchartered waters for us in Solon. We have thought long and hard about the best way to address the need for so many people associated with Parkside to attend Mrs. Keeney’s funeral services on Friday. After much reflection, we have decided to have just a half day of school at Parkside on Friday to enable staff and families who were close to Mrs. Keeney to be able to attend the services at 11 on Friday. This was not an easy decision but it seems to be the right decision. We will dismiss students at 10:20 …

Students at Parkside had guests from around the community reading to them to mark the start of Read-A-Thon.
Students at Parkside Elementary School are going to be having fun reading for the next two weeks to raise money for school activities. The school kicked off the Read-A-Thon on Oct. 15 by having some special guest readers from around the community reading to classes to share their love of the written word with the students. Readers included Mayor Susan Drucker, Fire Chief Bill Shaw, Solon Superintendent Joe Regano, some Solon football stars and cheerleaders and Patch Local Editor Chris Mazzolini. Editor's Note: Thanks to the Parkside PTA moms for taking photos while we read!

A Halloween Party for the kids is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Parkside Elementary.
The Solon Early Childhood PTA has lots of events throughout the year. None are as scary as the Halloween Party. Actually, the party is more about fun than about scares. It is being held at Parkside Elementary School in Solon and is set to last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you bring your little ghost or ghoul, expect a fun-filled morning of Halloween activities and lots of entertainment, including bounce houses, face painting, crafts, games and treats. Halloween costumes, of course, are welcome. Do your kids like creepy-crawley critters? Of course they do! So make sure to stay for Outback Ray, who hosts a cool animal show featuring everything from snakes to hissing cockroaches! The animal show is from noon to 1 p.m. Happy Halloween!

Consignment day for the popular semi-annual sale is Wednesday and the sale opens to the public on Thursday. The event is held at Parkside Elementary School.
Madness for a good cause. That's one way to describe Solon Council of PTA's Fall Budget Bin Sale, a giant consignment sale beginning Thursday at Parkside Elementary and running through Tuesday. On Wednesday, hundreds of consignors will flock to Parkside's gym to put their goods -- everything you can imagine -- up for sale. If an item sells, the consignor gets half the proceeds and the other half goes to the PTA's Lois Gazeley Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for Solon High School seniors. Last year, $34,000 was raised for scholarships, said Alison Borodkin, the Budget Bin co-chairwoman. The sale, which begins 10 a.m. Thursday, is great bargain-hunting opportunity. Nearly anything you can imagine will be there, from gently used…

You can hear the students now: If only the school year moved as quickly as this video
At about 7:43 a.m. today, buses rolled into Solon's Parkside Elementary School to begin another school year. Some of the kids hurried off the bus and ran toward the door – that's how excited they were to begin the school year. But the responsible adults helping the students off the bus were quick to slow the students to a safe walk, but not without encouraging words about the kids' excitement to learn. We at Patch encourage students to listen to their teachers, but we also wanted to have some fun on the first day of school by creating this sort-of time lapse video of this morning's grand entrance into the school. We distilled a roughly 15-minute process of unloading students from buses into about a minute and a half. We hope you enjoy it! …
