Lady Comets Basketball Wins Season Opener

The Lady Comets defeated St. Vincent St. Mary behind 24 points from Martha Thompson.

The Solon Lady Comets kicked off a promising 2012-13 season with a 59-51 win at St. Vincent- St. Mary. The Comets (1-0) got off to a fast start and never trailed in the game. The Comets were led in scoring by Martha Thompson with 24 points and Jordan Bekelja with 17 points. The Comets open up their home season with a game Wednesday against Mayfield. JVs tip off at 6 p.m. and the varsity game is at 7:30 p.m.

Solon Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

Four student-athletes signed letters of intention to play at colleges in Ohio, Oklahoma, New York and Arizona

Four Solon High School athletes decided on their collegiate destinations Wednesday and let family, friends and coaches witness part of the process. For National Letter of Intent Day, the students made their choices official by signing their letters in an assembly hosted in the atrium. Here are the athletes and where they will be attending college in 2013: "They've already won two state titles, and they both won 124 matches," Solon Wrestling coach Tony DiGiovani said. Solon Lady Comets Play Twinsburg Friday For Trip To Columbus

The Comets defeated Mentor Tuesday to force a showdown with Twinsburg in the regional final.

The Solon Comets defeated Mentor 85-33 Tuesday to set up a rematch against Twinsburg in Friday's regional final. The winning team will head to Columbus next week to play as one of the final four teams in the Division One state championship. Solon's Kristen Confroy and Martha Thompson each had 21 points in the win against Mentor. Jaime Gluesing scored 14 points. Solon only lost three games during the regular season, and two of them were to Twinsburg. On Feb. 4, Twinsburg defeated the Comets 56-48 in Solon. The Comets also lost 51-35 on Dec. 14. Friday's game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

Sweet 16: Solon Girls Basketball Plays Mentor Tonight in Regional Semi-Final

The Solon Comets and Mentor Cardinals will play in the regional semi-final game at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Canton Memorial Civic Arena.

It's sweet 16 time in the Division One girls basketball state championship tournament, and the Solon Lady Comets are still alive. A 57-39 win over Shaker Heights in the Bedford district championship game on Saturday means the Lady Comets are one of 16 teams remaining. Two more wins and Solon will be heading to Columbus as one of the final four teams and a chance to compete for a state championship. But first things first. Solon will play Mentor in the regional semi-final game at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Solon, a 21-3 record in the regular season, has defeated Cleveland East Technical, Garfield Heights, Maple Heights and Shaker Heights in the playoffs. Lady Comets Basketball Play In District Final Today, March 3

The Comets take on Shaker Heights at 1 p.m. at Bedford High School.

Solon Lady Comets basketball will play Shaker Heights at 1 p.m. today for the Bedford district crown. The 21-2 Comets defeated Maple Heights 80-45 in the semi-final match. They were led by Kristen Confroy, who scored 20 points, and Jaime Gluesing and Martha Thompson, who scored 18 and 14 points, respectively. The game is being played at Bedford High School. Solon girls gaining confidence after two big wins and a 10-2 record

The Solon Lady Comets basketball team is playing its best ball of the season of late as the Lady Comets are now 10-2 overall following huge victories over highly regarded Magnificat and state-ranked Gahanna Lincoln. What is most impressive is the fact that Solon has just three seniors on the roster and five underclassmen (including a pair of freshmen) are seeing plenty of playing time. "It took us a while to start getting after it on the defensive end of the floor and we have been playing unselfish basketball and those are two things that make for a great team," said third-year head coach Trish Kruse.
