Solon Schools staff will receive a day of school safety and security training on April 2. Students will be off school that day as principals, teachers and staff receive training from school safety consultant Ken Trump, who has been hired by the school district to help improve school building security in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. shooting. After the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14, school security has once again become a main issue in education. On Monday, school security expert Ken Trump, president and CEO of National School Safety and Security Services, gave a presentation for the Solon City School District putting the topic of school safety into context. One of the leading experts in school safety said he thinks the Solon City School District is going in the right direction. Ken Trump, the president and CEO of National School Safety and Security Services, gave a presentation to parents Monday on the ever-changing school environment and how schools can prepare for the worst. "One thing I appreciate about Solon schools is that this is an ongoing process," Trump said of the district's effort to keep its schools safe. Solon parents and community members are invited to a forum tonight on school safety hosted by Solon Schools and featuring a nationally renowned school security expert. Ken Trump, the president of National School Safety Security Services, will hold an informational meeting with parents and community members on Monday night. Officials from the city of Solon and the Solon school board met Thursday to again discuss school safety issues and the way they can work together to make the city and the school buildings safer. Solon officials have been discussing security issues in detail since December's tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Thursday's meeting included Solon Mayor Susan A. Drucker, Police Chief Christopher Viland, and City Council Safety and Public Properties Committee Chair Bill Russo, and members of the Solon school board and administration.
