Solon Hockey Plays Three Overtime Games During Kent Tourney

The Solon Comets hockey team went 2-2 in their weekend games at the Adam S. Hamilton Memorial Tournament, and three of their games went to overtime.

The Solon Hockey team played four games at the Adam S. Hamilton Memorial Tournament in Kent last weekend. Three of them went to overtime. The Comets split their four games, winning both against Chagrin. Both games against the Tigers went to overtime, and Dan Roberts and Ben Peterson each scored a game-winning goal. Solon also lost to Kent -- another overtime game -- and mentor. The team begins league play this coming weekend. The Comets travels to Kent to play Chagrin Valley Christian Academy at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Comets open at home at Gilmour Ice rink against Kenston at 5 p.m. Good luck Comets!

I winced stepping out of the shower. Every muscle hurt. I’d battled the flu earlier that week, but this was something bigger, more consuming. The third day must be the worst, I reasoned. Three Hockey Players Named All-Stars

Kyle Peterson, Sam Littman and Gordie Hammond were all named All-League players in the White Division

Three Solon Comets hockey players were named to the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League's White Division. Goalie Kyle Peterson was named as first team goalie. In 24 games, he collected 424 saves. His record was 16-7, with six shutouts. Captain Gordie Hammond was selected as defenseman on the second team, one of two defensive players selected. Hammond had a plus-minus score of 50. Offensively, he scored 8 goals and collected 14 assists. Forward Sam Littman was also named to the second team, one of four forwards on the all-league squad. Littman was Solon's second highest scorer with 20 goals and 23 assists. He led Solon in power play goals with five.

WRESTLING Solon had three weight class champs at the Northeast Ohio Conference Meet as Brandon Thompson, Anthony Collica and Nathan Hoff captured titles. Thompson won the 103-pound class with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Mayfield’s Mike Carlone, Collica rolled to a 13-2 decision over Armando Torres of Elyria and Hoff captured the heavyweight title with a pin at the 2:18 mark against Derek Rhodes of Cuyahoga Falls. The Week in Solon Sports is just that - a weekly look at Solon High School sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports you need. WRESTLING The Comets will be one of the teams to beat in this weekend’s Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division championships to be contested at Garfield Heights High School. Action gets underway at 4 p.m. today and the finals will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Solon finished the dual meet portion of the season with a 4-1 mark, one match behind Elyria. The eventual champion will be determined by both dual match and tournament results. Solon’s standout sophomores Brandon Thompson (103 pounds) and Anthony …

Your Weekend Planner

Some activities to do during the weekend of Jan. 21

It's the weekend, so hopefully you'll have a bit of time on your hands to unwind and have some fun. Here are some activities planned in Solon and surrounding areas to have you do just that. If sports are your thing, the Solon basketball team is in action this weekend, with the boys competing against Stow at home tonight and the girls playing against Normandy on Saturday. The gymnastics team is at Twinsburg tonight at 7 p.m. Swimming also takes on Stow at home tonight at 6 p.m. Hockey heads to Kenston for a battler at 8:40 p.m. Saturday. Solon Hockey Splits First Two Games of MLK Tourney

Solon defeats St. Catherine's in early game 3-0, but then loses to Southgate 0-3

You can't win them all. The Comets lost 0-3 to Southgate Saturday night in Solon's second game of the MLK tournament. But earlier in the day, Solon defeated St. Catherine's by a score of 3-0. Goalie Ryan Malik collected 12 saves and the shutout. Scoring for Solon were Nate Lapin, Sam Littman and John Hannah. Today, the Comets take on the North Kentucky Norsemen at Winterhurst Ice Rink at 4:50 p.m. and the Pittsburgh Huskies at 9:35 p.m. in Strongsville. The tournament final is scheduled to be played in Mentor at 5 p.m. Monday.
