PolitiFact: Ed FitzGerald 'Mostly False' in First Obama Supporter Claim

Former Lakewood mayor and potential candidate for Ohio governor, FitzGerald told a group of college students he was the first Cuyahoga County official to endorse Obama.

As Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald travels the state rallying support for his possible run for Ohio governor, he's been attracting the attention of the folks at Politifact Ohio. Recently, they checked out a claim published late last month by the Cincinnati Enquirer that FitzGerald, the former mayor of Lakewood, said he was the first Cuyahoga County official to endorse Barack Obama for president.  Politifact Ohio called that claim mostly false. They weren't able to prove that he wasn't the first, but neither was FitzGerald.  Does this mean anything to you in deciding whether you think FitzGerald has a shot at the governor's seat? Tell us what you think.

Suburban Officials Open to County Plan to Share Some Services

County Executive FitzGerald announces effort toward regionalization.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald wants to push regionalization forward, with the county making its services available to cities on a contract basis. Speaking at the City Club for his second state of the county address, FitzGerald said Greater Cleveland cannot compete against other metropolitan areas with the inefficiencies that come with having functions performed by 59 different communities. "It is self-evident that our current patchwork of individual kingdoms is powerless to execute any coordinated strategy to compete in a global economy," he said. As part of his "Western Reserve Plan," FitzGerald proposed that the county start with computer services and eventually expand the level of services offered. "The concept is simple and …

I would think that a healthy, viable core city is important to any metropolitan area. I can't imagine suburbs can thrive for an extended period of time without it.   more ›

Solon Mayor Undecided on County 'No-Poaching' Pact

Solon Mayor Susan Drucker said she plans to review the letter from Cuyahoga County with her economic development staff, but said she hasn't seen signs of business poaching in the area

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald wants suburban mayors to sign a deal by the end of the month to stop cities from poaching businesses from each other, according to The Plain Dealer. Solon Mayor Susan Drucker said she has received the letter, but wants to review it with Economic Development Manager Peggy Weil-Dorfman before making a decision. The policy has been discussed by county and suburban officials for a few months. The newspaper reports that the guidelines say trigger notifications and discussions between cities when a company approaches a suburb about moving. Cities are still free to market themselves, but can't pursue specific companies. The Cuyahoga County suburbs that sign on could be eligible to receive cash from a $100 …

Voters Will Receive Absentee Applications by Mail

Cuyahoga County officials override a state directive

Cuyahoga County plans to again mail out applications for absentee ballots to all voters. That's a big deal for Solon. In the November 2010 election, more than half of all ballots cast were absentee, according to data from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Cuyahoga County Council voted last night to override opposition from Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and support County Executive Ed FitzGerald's decision to continue mailing the applications. "We can't go back to the days of long lines and voter confusion," Cuyahoga County Vice President Sunny Simon said in a news release.  "Our elections board has implemented key reforms – and they've worked. Our ability to vote is a fundamental right that must come first." Solon voters have …
