The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the checkpoint it announced earlier this week was will be in Portage County Saturday evening. The exact location of the drunken driving checkpoint will be known Saturday morning. The checkpoint is funded by federal grant funds and is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers, according to a press release from the Ravenna post. "Based on provisional data, there were 452 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 494 people were killed last year in Ohio," Lt. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will not be announced until the day prior to the operation.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent out a press release Monday morning notifying the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint. "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement. A Bedford woman faces charges of drunken driving and drug abuse after a Solon Police officer found her sleeping in her car in the middle of Aurora Road, according to a police report. Arrested and charged with Tamara Boykin, 37, of Bedford. She is charged with drunken driving, drug abuse, possession of drug paraphernalia and stopping or slow speed, according to the report. On Dec. 16 at about 3 a.m., a Solon Police officer found a car stopped on Aurora Road near the 31500 block. The brake lights of the car were on, and it was running. The officer approached the car to find a woman sleeping in the driver's seat with the car in drive and her foot on the brake. A Solon man with multiple prior drunken driving arrests was charged with drunken driving after police say he hit two mailboxes and a parked car while driving, according to a Solon Police report. Samuel Monachino, 44, of Solon, is charged with drunken driving, hit and skip and failure to control, according to the police report. According to the report, a resident on Woodlands Lane called police to tell them that a pickup truck had hit his parked car. He also said that the truck had first hit two mailboxes on Aurora Road, according to the report. Officers caught the pickup driver after he ran his truck onto a curb on SOM Center Road near Bainbridge Road. The driver refused a breathalyzer, according to the police report.

A 34-year-old man is charged with drunken driving after he essentially turned himself in by stopping to ask a Solon police officer for directions. Arrested and charged with drunken driving is Perry L. Allen, 34, of Lakewood, according to a police report. At about 1 a.m. on Dec. 8, A Solon police officer parked at the closed Sunoco Station at SOM Center and Aurora roads was approached by a man after a car pulled in behind him. The man asked the cop for directions to Stouffers. The man smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech, according to the report. The police officer conducted field sobriety tests. The man refused a breathalyzer test.

An officer patrolling the Solon Freeway Lanes area on the night of Sept. 10 saw a large crowd gathering outside and a man screaming at the top of his lungs, according to Solon police. The man, David Sabb, 51, is an employee at the bowling alley and was screaming at his manager because she wouldn't give him his keys, police said. Sabb had been drinking since 5 p.m., and at midnight, he was ready to go home. The manager was trying to arrange a ride, and when she wouldn't hand over his keys, he became belligerent. Police arrested Sabb and charged him with disorderly conduct, but he avoided a driving while drunk charge.
