Senior DeAndre Payton leads Solon to the win, but loses something to – his cellphone and $25 are stolen at game's halftime
If you want to call Solon's DeAndre Payton to congratulate him on his fine performance in the Comets' 58-50 sectionals victory, you may have to wait a few days. At halftime, he discovered his cell phone and $25 were stolen. Fortunately, Payton had a good attitude about the whole thing. The Comets won and Payton was clearly the star of the game, getting crucial scores in the big moments to help put his team over Lakeside Ashtabula in their opening-round sectional victory. “I’m not going to worry about it,” Payton said of his missing cell phone. “It’s just a material item.” Payton had the presence of mind to score 17 points to lead the Comets (8-13) over Lakeside (15-6), and teammate Christopher Cromity backed him up with 14 points. Although…

Solon's DeAndre Payton suffered a horrific injury during a dunk attempt in January, but now he's back and better than ever
Those who saw it will never forget it. It is the ultimate irony that DeAndre Payton can’t remember it. Payton, the senior center for the Solon basketball team, went up for a dunk against Cuyahoga Falls on Jan. 7. Unintentionally undercut by a Falls player, Payton tried to hold on to the rim but could not and crashed to the court head first. The sickening scenario quieted the crowd as Comet head coach Sean Fisher and trainer Adam Lake rushed to Payton’s aid. Players, coaches and fans were hoping for the best while dreading the worst outcome. "I remember that I knew it was going to be bad because you could see him going down head-first,” Fisher said. “I was already moving toward him before he hit the floor. It was the worst thing I’ve seen …
