Girls' tennis team captures Medina Doubles Tournament
Solon's fall sports teams are off to fast starts to the new season with strong performances from the girls' and boys' golf teams and an early season tournament triumph from the girls' tennis team. Girls' Tennis Solon captured the top spot in the Medina Doubles Tournament Saturday, finishing with a team total of 29 points to edge CVCA (27 points) for first place. The Lady Comets got first places from the second doubles team of Daisy Chung and Danielle Pivovar (6-0, 6-4), the third doubles team of Hailey Baird and Lisa Guo (6-2, 7-5) and the fourth doubles team of Monika Bandi and Alana Fayman (6-4, 6-4). The first doubles team of Tinisee Kandakai and Jamie Marks took a fourth place after a tough 7-6, 6-2 setback in the consolation finals. …

Current and former Comet booters meet on the field in annual contest
Some former Solon soccer players found out you really can go home again Saturday. The Comet soccer program held its annual alumni game at Stewart Field Saturday night and the graduates were able to come away with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over the current varsity. The game was followed with a dinner and a lot of reminiscing by Solon players, parents and coaches. "We like to keep the alumni connected with the current players and it's a good event for our program," said Comet head coach Ryan Conner. "They have had success before I got here and we want to keep building on that tradition." After recent tough losses to top teams, Comets defeat Chagrin Falls 16-2
After tough losses to tough teams in Medina and Western Reserve Academy, Solon lacrosse took it to Chagrin Falls 16-2 to return to the win column. The victory lifts the Comets to a 9-4 record. Whiz Kids of the Week: Solon High's Science Olympiad Team Seniors Sonia Godbole, Nick Palumbo, Eugene Rabinovich, Stephanie Sang, Daniel Sperling and Lillian Sun (and the rest of the high school and middle school teams) Accomplishment: The seniors be recognized for their achievements during high school as they near graduation, but they also really rocked during the recent Science Olympiad state tournament, leading the team to a second place finish. That's in a field of 40 teams! Both teams are now headed to Nationals! That competition is set for May 18-21 at the University of Wisconsin. Kristen Confroy tripled twice, drove in two runs and scored the winning run on a hit by teammate Carly Simecek in the seventh inning of a 5-4 win over Stow on Thursday. Senior DeAndre Payton leads Solon to the win, but loses something to – his cellphone and $25 are stolen at game's halftime
If you want to call Solon's DeAndre Payton to congratulate him on his fine performance in the Comets' 58-50 sectionals victory, you may have to wait a few days. At halftime, he discovered his cell phone and $25 were stolen. Fortunately, Payton had a good attitude about the whole thing. The Comets won and Payton was clearly the star of the game, getting crucial scores in the big moments to help put his team over Lakeside Ashtabula in their opening-round sectional victory. “I’m not going to worry about it,” Payton said of his missing cell phone. “It’s just a material item.” Payton had the presence of mind to score 17 points to lead the Comets (8-13) over Lakeside (15-6), and teammate Christopher Cromity backed him up with 14 points. Humphrey, who will be playing football at Kent State next year, will be honored by the Cleveland Touchdown Club on March 5
It's been a good month for Solon's Chris Humphrey. First, the Comets' two-way threat signed a scholarship to play wide receiver at Kent State University. Now, Humphrey has been named Cuyahoga County's Defensive Player of the Year by the Cleveland Touchdown Club, according to Solon City Schools. Humphrey was a jack-of-all-trades on the field this past season for the Comets, excelling on offensive, defense and special teams. He played quarterback on offense, throwing 655 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 841 yards and 16 touchdowns, according to the school's statistics for the 2010 season. As a safety, Humphrey recorded 20 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble. He took two of his picks and the fumble recovery back for touchdowns…
