Unbeaten Solon Can't Overlook Talented North Royalton

Comets Coach Jim McQuaide wants players to keep paying attention to details

Little things mean a lot during the course of the high school football season. "When you reach this point in the season you sometimes lose attention to detail," said Solon head coach Jim McQuaide. "We have to make sure we pay attention to the little things." A lot of Northeast Ohio football fans are paying attention to the Comets, who take an unbeaten 3-0 mark into Friday night's homecoming contest against North Royalton. Solon, ranked 11th in the Division I state poll, is coming off an impressive 28-2 win over visiting Akron Buchtel last week as the Comets continue to take care of business. "We made some plays in all three aspects of the game," said McQuaide, whose team is riding a 23-game regular season win streak and a 19-game home …

Solon Boys Soccer Fights to 0-0 Tie With Rival Twinsburg

Contest featured up and down action between two of the best teams in the area

Let’s face it, goalkeepers in soccer do a lot of standing around, and although they might be roused to action once or twice in a match, they had better make the play when that rousing arrives. Solon’s 5-foot-10 senior goalkeeper Tommy Koenig met that moment and surpassed it at the end of the Comets’ contest against rival Twinsburg, preserving a 0-0 tie Tuesday in the waning moments of the second half at Tiger Stadium in Twinsburg. In a contest that featured more dodges and parries than many sword fights, it was Koenig who struck perhaps the biggest blow, denying Tigers forward Chase Betenson’s 10-foot blast in front of the net with 6:49 remaining in the game. With the ball bouncing around between a pair of Comets defenders seemingly in …

Solon Comets Win Home Opener, Defeating Akron Buchtel 28-2

Comets rise to 3-0 on young season

The Solon Comets have rolled so far this season, and Friday was no exception. The Comets defeated Akron Buchtel 28-2, rising to 3-0 on the young season. It was the first home game of the year. "We love playing here," said head coach Jim McQuaide. "It's a great place to play. We were playing a good team with some good players. Led by quarterback Pat Kramer, the Comets took to the air Friday. Kramer threw the ball all over the field, completing long passes for first downs and throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tres Barksdale. Twice in the first half, Kramer moved the chains by completing long passes to receiver Anthony Restifo, one was third and 10, the other was third and 12. Both drives ended with Comet touchdowns. Solon Comets Take on Akron Buchtel Friday

Solon winning streaks on the line as Comets host Akron Buchtel

You would be hard-pressed to find an Ohio high school football team with a tougher first three weeks of the season than Akron Buchtel. The Griffins opened the season at Massillon and then went on the road to play at Steubenville. The week three opponent? None other than Solon, which brings a 22-game regular season win streak into the game along with an 18-game home winning streak. Buchtel, a Division III state finalist last year, lost 25 players to graduation, but the athletic Griffins remain a serious threat to the Comets on Friday night. "They were in the state finals last year, I don't care what division it was," said Solon head coach Jim McQuaide. "They're a very good team and have some outstanding players. Massillon and Steubenville …

Solon Comets Roll Over Kilbourne 34-0

An overpowering defense and big-play offense led the Comets over Worthington Kilbourne

The Solon Comets dominated the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves 34-0 Friday, deploying shutdown defense and big-play offense to control all four quarters.  The Comets (2-0) were more steady against Kilbourne and didn't have the late lapses that slightly marred last week's win over Shaker Heights. "We did a better job of being consistent tonight," Coach Jim McQuaide said after the game. "We talked about that alot this week, and I think we did that." McQuaide said he was proud of his defense, especially his younger players who stuffed the Wolves (1-1) on a goal-line stand late in the fourth quarter. "The defense played well," he said. "The young guys made a huge stand there." Offensively, the Comets moved the ball all over the field, sparked by …
