Metroparks Supports City's SOM Center Horse Crossing Plan

The city wants to build a system of flashing lights where multi-purpose trails cross SOM Center Road near Hawthorne Parkway.

The Cleveland Metroparks said they would support Solon's idea to create flashing signals at a popular horse and pedestrian crossing near the entrance to the South Chagrin Reservation. The safety committee will continue discussions of the horse crossing at its meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Since a number of horse-riding enthusiasts told Solon's safety committee in August they were concerned that the crossing was dangerous, city officials have been trying to work out a solution to improve the perceived safety of the crossing. Residents say that drivers are too distracted and driving too fast Riders have said they wanted a traffic light, but Traffic Engineer Kevin Westbooks said the intersection doesn't warrant a light. The Metroparks offer a great winter wonderland in Solon and throughout the Cleveland area

Strap on the Snowshoes, and Go with IGO

Metroparks program available on wintry weekends at the South Chagrin Reservation in January

John Kowalchik wanted something to do when he retires in a couple of years.  Why not snowshoeing? Kowalchik is now a volunteer with the Metroparks' Institute for the Great Outdoors, called IGO, which is offering snowshoe excursions for beginners on weekends in January and February. Kowalchik, who joked that his previous experience on an "Arctic expedition" was limited to hikes from the garage to the house, said that he became interested in Metroparks activities. So he began volunteering with IGO.  “My wife and I took a night hike on snowshoes at Look About Lodge not too long ago," Kowalchik said. "It was wonderful."
