The academy will begin in March. It won't make you a police officer, but will teach you what it's like to be a cop.
As part of its new effort to reach out to the public, the Solon Police Department is organizing its first ever citizens academy. The academy is free to Solon residents and business owners and managers. Applicants must be 18 years old by March 1 and will have to pass a background check. Lt. Bruce Felton, a department spokesman, said the academy will teach residents what it's like to be a police officer. "This will give people the opportunity to really understand what we do, how we do it, why we do it and how it affects them," Felton said. The nine-week program won't make you into a police officer, Felton said, but it will provide participants information on on a variety of subjects, such as driving, investigations, firearms and others. …

Residents say drivers don't stop for horse riders, cyclists and walkers trying to cross SOM Center Road at the Metro Park's South Chagrin Reservation entrance
Residents on the north side of Solon are concerned about a horse path across SOM Center Road near the Metro Parks they believe is too dangerous for riders and walkers alike. A number of residents attended Wednesday's Safety Committee meeting in hopes the city can help find a solution. They say that drivers don't stop and that the speeding traffic often spooks horses, which could lead to a tragedy. "They won't stop for anyone," resident Tess McCarihan said of the drivers. "It's not a matter of if there's going to be an accident, it's when." Solon Traffic Engineer Kevin Westbrooks said he has met with the residents and is trying to come up with a solution. The difficulty is that traditional options either can't be done or may not solve the …

The proposed two-year agreement would pay the city $75 per day per prisoner
The Solon Police Department is working on an agreement with the Village of Orange to house their prisoners, a move that will add another revenue stream for the jail. Police Chief Chris Viland said he has been working on the deal since February. The proposed two-year deal says Orange will pay Solon $75 per prisoner per day. Viland said he has been pursing "cost-effective" ways to operate the jail since he took over as police chief earlier this year. One way to do that is to increase revenue streams by bringing in more outside prisoners. Solon already contracts with Shaker Heights, Bentleyville and Woodmere. Viland told the safety committee this week that he is in discussion with two other organizations interested in contracting with the …

Fire Chief and Police Chief give residents warnings about fireworks on the Fourth of July
Solon Police Chief Chris Viland and Fire Chief Bill Shaw want residents to stay safe this Fourth of July. The best way to do that, they say, is follow the rules regarding fireworks in Ohio. State law says that it's illegal for anyone to set off fireworks unless you have a license to do so. And there's little gray area. Basically, if it goes bang, it's illegal. The other law is that if you buy fireworks in Ohio, you must remove them from the state within 48 hours. You are required to sign an agreement at the time purchasing pledging to follow this law. Viland said that Solon police will "confiscate, cite and arrest" anyone they catch setting off fireworks. He reminds residents, who may call the police to complain about neighbors setting off…

We moved here in '87. O'Neil's landing was still a vacant lot with two beautiful lakes, the Chagrin Highlands was undeveloped land where I walked my dogs, Signature of Solon was a corn field and things just seemed more hospitable all around. A great place to raise a family. I miss that allot! Kids growing up in Solon today have no idea what they missed. I imagine people like yourself, who have …   more ›
