Funeral services for Shawn Cultrona will be this week in Solon as police continue to investigate what happened to him
A Twinsburg man found dead in his home on Sunday grew up in Solon and graduated from Solon High School. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said Monday there was no foul play in the death of 36-year-old Shawn Cultrona, Twinsburg Police Chief Christopher Noga told Twinsburg Patch. Police were called to the Cultrona's Country Club Circle home at about 11:46 a.m. Sunday after his wife and 6-year-old son found his body in the bathroom. Noga said the two had stayed at a friend’s house the night before. On Monday, Noga said there was no sign of forcd entry into the home. Noga said the coroner's official ruling could be done Tuesday, clearing up some details of what happened at Cultrona's home on Sunday morning. Initial incorrect media …

Paul S. Sanislo, who moved from Cleveland to Solon in 1968 because of the outstanding reputation of the Solon City Schools, served as president of the Solon City Board of Education in the mid-1970s. “When he was on the school board, he was very adamant about penmanship,” said his daughter, Susan Tilly. “He wanted that to be part of the curriculum: writing lessons. He wanted people to be able to write legibly.” Sanislo, a lawyer who died June 2 at age 84, also served as president of the Solon Charter Review Commission and legal adviser to the Solon Drug Abuse Center, which he helped organize. The Solon mother and daughter were killed in traffic crash April 18
The wake and funeral services for Solon's Malaka and Maliyah Jones are set for Friday. The wake for Malaka Jones, 38, and her daughter, Maliyah Jones, 11, will begin at 10 a.m. Friday followed by 10:30 a.m. funeral services at Mt. Zion Church of Oakwood Village, 1 Mt. Zion Circle, Oakwood. Arrangements are by Gaines Funeral Home of Cleveland. The Solon mother and daughter, along with traveling companion Sherita Hogans, 29, of Cleveland, were killed April 18 in a traffic accident on the Interstate 77 bridge between Marietta, OH, and Williamstown, WV. Malaka Jones, whose maiden name was Stephens, graduated from the Cleveland School for the Arts in 1991. Maliyah Jones was a fifth-grader at Orchard Middle School.

Mandich's great football career at Michigan and the Miami Dolphins began at Solon High School
Multiple media have reported that pro and college football star Jim Mandich, who began his career at Solon High School, has died at age 62. Mandich died Tuesday after a long fight with bile-duct cancer. Mandich was a multi-sport star at Solon. He was named a High School All-American in 1965 in football and held the school shot put and discus records until 2010, when they were broken by standout A.J. Hicks. Since leaving Solon, Mandich went on to be named an All-American at the University of Michigan in the late 1960s, leading the Wolverines to a Rose Bowl victory his senior year. According to the Detroit Free Press, Mandich holds the Michigan record for receiving yards by a tight end in a season with 662 catches. He is second all-time in …

George B. Buksar started selling office machines for IBM (International Business Machines) in 1949, while beginning his professional football career with the Chicago Hornets of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Solon resident, who died Feb. 22 at age 84, recognized that he had to prepare for life after football. According to Pigskin: The Early Years of Pro Football by Robert W. Peterson, Buksar spent weekday mornings at football practice and afternoons learning how to operate IBM products. Before the season ended, he was selling office machines in the Chicago area. The high school earned its first National Blue Ribbon School designation under Kotora's leadership
Solon High School received its first National Blue Ribbon School designation under the leadership of E. James Kotora, who served as the school’s principal for 19 years before retiring in 1994. “He was a tireless worker for the schools and for the students,” said Joseph V. Regano, superintendent of schools. “He was passionate about it, and it showed.” The 75-year-old Solon resident, who died Feb. 15 from injuries related to a recent fall, began his tenure at Solon as assistant principal in 1972. When Kotora became principal three years later, he took time to know his charges and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Edward James Kotora was an educator in Solon for more than 20 years
A popular former Solon High School principal who helped build one of the best high schools in the state and country died Tuesday. Edward James Kotora, of Solon, died from injuries related to a recent fall. He was 75. “The Solon Schools lost a true friend with the passing of Jim Kotora,” said Solon Superintendent Joe Regano in a news release. “As principal, Jim bridged the gap between the ‘70s and the ‘90s, which culminated in Solon High School being named a National Blue Ribbon School. He was truly a students’ principal, who always worked with students to achieve the best outcome. They loved him and the community embraced his leadership while he was with us.
