Week in Solon Sports: First Spring Sports Edition

Comet track and tennis teams stay unbeaten and more from the early spring sports season

The Week in Solon Sports is just that – a weekly look at Solon High School sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports you need.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Comets are on track for another big season. The boys' team bested Hudson 103-34 as A.J. Hicks, Darian Hicks, Khoury Crenshaw and Rod Jackson were all multiple winners. A.J. Hicks won the shot put (59-9)  and the discus (172-3); Darian Hicks won the high jump (6-4) and the long jump (21-1); Crenshaw was tops in the 100 meters (10.9) and the 200 meters (22.4) and Jackson raced to victory in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.6) and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.6).

Other Solon winners were Karl Pierce in the pole vault (13-6); the 4x800-meter relay of Darian Hicks, Paul Arters, Eric Hansen and Andrew Richard (10:38); the 4x200 relay of Hicks, Christian Jackson, Jeremy Nelson and Crenshaw (1:48); the 4x100 relay of Hicks, Jackson, Kollyn Crenshaw and Khoury Crenshaw (45.0); Matt Thompson in the 400 meters (52.9); Zack Zimmers in the 800 meters (2:02.9) and Kevin Blank in the 3200 meters (10:05).

The Comet boys also captured the top spot in the Medina Relays with Hicks taking first in the shot put (60-0) and the discus (169-1) while Khoury Crenshaw won the 100 meters (11.35). Solon also won the 4x100-meter relay with Darian Hicks, Thompson, Nelson and Crenshaw (43.25); the 800-meter sprint medley relay with Hicks, Jackson, Crenshaw and Thompson (1:34.62) and the 4x400-meter relay of Rod Jackson, Nelson, Jackson and Thompson (3:27.41).

Solon's girls also won a team title at Medina. The Lady Comets got firsts from Tinisee Kandakai in the long jump (16-1.) and the distance medley relay of Kelsey Aamoth, Melissa Yasnowski, Anna Fakler and Therese Haiss (12:54.94). Paige Yaeger was second in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.15) and Jelvon Butler was second in the 100 meters (13.14). Solon added seconds in the 4x100-meter relay with Kristen Baldwin, London McNair, Natalie Ockunzzi and Butler (50.74) and the 4x1600 relay with Aamoth, Fakler, Kelsey Harris and Haiss (22:21.94).

UP NEXT: Solon will compete at the Walsh Warrior Relays tomorrow and in dual meet action at Strongsville Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Comet pitcher Dani Zysek threw a four-hitter, striking out six batters in a 1-0 win over Medina. Sharon Wong tripled and scored on Kristen Confroy's fielder's choice for the game's only run as Solon evened it season record at 3-3.

Zysek pitched well again but took the loss in a 1-0 setback to Nordonia. Leah Archer had her team's lone run batted in during a 5-1 loss to crosstown rival Twinsburg.

UP NEXT: Solon has a busy schedule ahead as the Lady Comets are slated to host a doubleheader with Mentor Saturday and entertain Cuyahoga Falls Monday, host Brecksville-Broadview Heights Tuesday and play in the Rock N Fire Classic Thursday through Saturday.

TENNIS

The Comet netters moved to 5-0 on the season with a 5-0 rout of  Brunswick. Solon winners included Jason Schrode (6-2, 6-2), Brian Yang (0-6, 7-6, 7-6), Andrew Branstetter (6-0, 6-1) and the doubles teams of Evan Schrode-Zach Singerman (6-0, 6-0) and Daniel Livshin-Brandon Gross (6-0, 6-1).

The team's biggest win of the week came with a 3-2 decision over perennial power Hawken. Comet winners were David Shankman (6-3, 6-3) and the doubles duos of Evan Schrode-Singerman (6-3, 6-1) and Liam O'Brien-Branstetter (6-4, 6-0).

UP NEXT: The Comets travel to Chagrin Falls Tuesday and Hudson Wednesday.

BASEBALL

The Comets are off to a 3-6 overall start and have had several tight games in conference action. Solon dropped a 5-4 decision to Cuyahoga Falls, fell to Mayfield 3-1 but picked up a 10-3 win over Cuyahoga Falls this week.

Eric Esborn doubled twice and drove home four runs in the win over Falls while Jesse Circeli and Anthony Dimarco both collected a pair of hits in the loss to Mayfield. "Those are the kind of games we're going to run into," said head coach Damien Kopkas of the loss to the Wildcats. "We have six losses but we've been in every game."

Esborn has been red hot at the plate with a .452 average and 14 runs batted in. Ryan Schwenke (.400) and Circelli (.391) have also been pounding the ball for Solon. Matt Smoral (1-0) has a .50 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 14 innings of work and Pat Vogel (1-2) has also been solid on the mound with a 1.00 ERA.

UP NEXT: Solon travels to North Royalton today and is scheduled for a doubleheader at West Geauga Saturday. The Comets play at Shaker Heights Monday, at Twinsburg Tuesday and host Twinsburg Wednesday.
