Tournaments Begin For Several Solon Sports: Weekly Recap

Comet fall teams gearing up for post-season play

The regular season is winding down for Solon's golf and tennis teams with tournament play beginning today with the sectional tennis tournament and next week for boys and girls golf sectionals.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The Division I sectional tournament hosted by Solon has been moved indoors for play today. All qualifiers will advance to next week's district tournament.

The Lady Comets bested Western Reserve Academy by a 3-2 count this week. Scoring points for Solon were Monika Bandi (6-2, 2-6, 6-0) and the doubles teams of Daisy Chung-Jamie Marks (6-2, 6-1) and Hailey Baird-Lisa Guo (6-1, 6-2).

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets will host Mayfield on Monday, Gilmour Tuesday and will compete in the NOC Tournament at Brush Thursday.

GIRLS' GOLF

Solon edged host Hudson 194-196 in a match held at Ellsworth Meadows. Aly Ales took medalist honors for the winners with a round of 41 while Tiffany Li carded a 47 and Alexis Gray and Grace Guttierrez both shot 53s.

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets, 5-5 in the NOC Valley Division and 10-7 overall, will play in the Division I sectional tournament Tuesday at Gleneagles.

BOYS' GOLF

UP NEXT: Solon has two tournaments left to play. The boys are slated to play in the NEO Invitational at Little Mountain tomorrow and will travel to Candywood Golf Course on Monday to attempt to advance from the sectional tournament.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Solon fell out of the ESPN Fab 50 with a 3-2 loss to unbeaten Hudson. Maddie Kresevec and Emily Russell scored goals for the Lady Comets, who fell to 9-2-1 overall.

Hannah Schippers scored a pair of goals as Solon bounced back with a 4-0 win over Stow, a team which entered the match with just one loss on the season. Russell and Natalie Ockunzzi also scored for the winners while Kristen Confroy needed just five saves to pick up her seventh shutout of the season.

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets hit the road to play at Lake Catholic Monday and will make the trip to Valley Forge Wednesday.

BOYS' SOCCER

Solon got past Mentor 1-0 in a defensive struggle as the Comets upped their season record to 7-2-3 overall. Jay Seetharaman scored the lone goal of the match while Tommy Koenig turned away seven shots to earn the shutout in goal.

UP NEXT: Solon plays at Westlake tomorrow and will entertain Hudson Tuesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Comets placed fourth at the competitive Fleet Feet Strongsville Invitational. Kevin Blank had the team's top finish at 24th place overall with a time of 17:17 and he was followed across the finish line by Dan Urbanek (27th - 17:18), Max Haiss (29th - 17:19), John Riordan (42nd - 17:37) and Eric Hansen (61st - 17:55). Solon is ranked 16th in the state among Division I teams this week.

The girls were ninth at Strongsville with a top finish of sixth overall by Therese Haiss (19:38). Also scoring for the Lady Comets were Kelsey Aamoth (14th - 20:01), Geneva Sandridge (50th - 21:15), Abby Paige (75th - 21:38) and Julia Haiss (76th - 21:39).

UP NEXT: Solon's boys and girls teams will compete in this afternoon's Gilmour Invitational.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Comets put up a fight against state-ranked Strongsville before falling by scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 14-25, 15-11. Kristi Tekavec had 17 kills and 15 digs for Solon while Kelsey Ansec and Chelsey Tekavec combined for another 19 kills. Maddy Voigt finished with three aces for the match and Monica Chehade led the team with 35 assists.

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets will play in the Mentor Tournament tomorrow and Sunday before back-to-back home matches with Brunswick on Tuesday and Medina on Wednesday.
