Winter sports are coming to an end. Your weekly recap comes a day early to look at Solon athletes still alive in state tournament play

This special edition of The Week in Solon Sports comes to you a day early. That's because winter sports are winding down and we're now deep into state competition play. And since Solon has lots of talented athletes still competing in their respective sports, we wanted to get the word out about their games, contests, matches and meets going on this weekend.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Comets nearly pulled off a big upset in their final regular season game before dropping a tough 59-58 decision to Stow. Chris Cromity (15 points), Nate Brillhart (11) and Brandon Marshall (10) all finished in double figures for Solon against a Stow team that finished 18-2 overall during the regular season.

The Comets are alive and kicking in the Division I sectional-district tournament at Euclid following this week. DeAndre Payton’s 17 points and another 14 points from Cromity led the Comets over Lakeside for the team’s eighth win in 21 games. Solon took control of the game with a 14-7 run in the third quarter.

UP NEXT: Solon will tangle with Willoughby South at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a sectional championship contest. Student ($4) and adult ($6) tickets for the game will be available at the high school athletic office until 3 p.m. today.

GYMNASTICS

Solon’s Erin Rabb will compete in this weekend’s state gymnastics championships to be held Friday and Saturday at Hilliard Bradley High School.
