The Solon High School Swimming and Diving team began its season with just over fifty swimmers and divers on their roster at the first practice on Nov. 2.
The team will be led this year by girls captains Corrine Brown and Tanya Akl and boys captains Ryan Carson and Mark Lippert. The diving captain is Sivan Mills.
The roster includes 9 returning state qualifiers: Diver Sivan Mills who was 6th place at last year's state meet, girls' swimmers, Becca Hoffman, Anna Wong, and Allison Hoffman who competed in the 200 free relay and finished in 14th place. Wong and Becca Hoffman along with Dana Lautenschleger also competed in the 200 Medley finishing in 16th place.
On the boys side, swimmers Grant Pinchot, Mark Lippert, Ryan Carson, and Patrick Tippen are the returning state qualifiers. Ryan Carson had a 12th place finish in the 100 backstroke in 2011, while fellow team member Mark Lippert placed 14th in the 500 freestyle at last year's meet.
All nine are aiming to not only make it to states this year but finish on the podium.
The team also has the potential to send some first time qualifiers to this year's state meet. The Comets roster includes 9 returning seniors, 11 returning juniors, 20 sophomores and 11 freshmen.
The season opener is the annual alumni meet which will take place on Friday Nov. 23 at the Solon High School pool. The following week the Comets will take on their first competitor in a dual meet in Twinsburg on Nov. 30.
