Solon Sports Recap: Wins Pile Up for Solon Teams

Girls' cross country wins at Mentor, girls' soccer moves up in Fab 50 rankings

The Solon Sports Recap is a weekly look at sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports you need.

Solon's fall sports teams continue to excel as the girls' cross country team brought home an invitational win while the girls' soccer team continues to improve in the national rankings.

Solon's Therese Haiss made a name for herself at the state championships last fall when she finished 23rd overall as a sophomore. Haiss is picking up where she left off as she captured first place in Saturday's Mentor Invitational with a time of 20:27.

Haiss was followed across the finish line by teammates Kelsey Aamoth (fourth - 20:50), Geneva Sandridge (sixth - 20:54), Julia Haiss (16th - 22:18) and Abby Paige (22:29). The Lady Comets finished with a team total of 47 points to best the host Cardinals (60).

The Comet boys also fared well at Mentor, taking a second place behind Chardon (57) with 67 points. Solon had a solid pack with Dan Urbanek placing sixth overall (17:40), followed by Kevin Blank (eighth - 17:55), Ethan Wise (13th - 18:10), Grant Behnke (18th - 18:22) and Eric Hansen (22nd - 18:29).

UP NEXT: The girls and boys will travel to Walsh Jesuit tomorrow morning to compete in the Tomahawk Run.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The young and talented Lady Comets have achieved a national ranking of 15th in the ESPNHS Fab 50 after a 5-0-1 start to the season. Solon is ranked just behind Walsh Jesuit and is the third-ranked school in Ohio (Dublin Coffman is 10th).

The Comet ladies as Hannah Schippers collected three goals while Emily Russell added two. Jordan Spiegle and Maddie Kresevic added single scores for the winners while Kristen Confroy needed just three saves in goal.

Solon completely dominated Youngstown Cardinal Mooney by a 6-1 score earlier in the week with Schippers and Russell scoring two goals each. Maria Collica and Kresevic also netted goals as the Lady Comets held a 21-2 edge in shots on goal. It was the first loss of the season for Mooney.

UP NEXT: Solon plays at Hudson tomorrow, hosts Brecksville-Broadview Heights Monday and travels to rival Twinsburg Wednesday.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Comets improved to 3-1-1 on the season with a 3-0 triumph over Brecksville-Broadview Heights. The team's three captains – Jay Seetharaman, Matt Pekarek and Drew Schneir – all scored goals in the victory while Tommy Koenig collected eight saves and posted the shutout in goal.

UP NEXT: Solon plays host to Shaker Heights tomorrow afternoon and hits the road for a big rivalry match at Twinsburg Tuesday.

GIRLS' GOLF

The Solon girls bested Hudson by a 184-202 count at Grantwood as Aly Ales shot a medalist round of 41 for the winners. Alex Gray shot a 45 while Grace Gutierrez and Leah Wilson both carded rounds of 49 as the team improved to 7-5 overall on the season.

The Lady Comets shot 206 to place behind Walsh (193) and Hudson (203) and ahead of Hathaway Brown (212) in an earlier match at Lake Forest Country Club. Ales and Gray posted rounds of 49 while Tifanny Li added a 52.

UP NEXT: Solon hosts North Royalton Monday, plays at the Turkeyfoot Tournament Wednesday and plays at Strongsville Thursday.

BOYS' GOLF

Solon's David Rudary carded a round of 38 but it wasn't enough as the Comets came in with a team total of 163 to place behind Stow (151) and Hudson (157).

Rudary continued his strong play with a medalist round of 35 as Solon downed Cuyahoga Falls 155-162. Anthony Stames shot a 39 for the winners while Jim Tornatore carded a 39 and Eric Rudary added a 42.

UP NEXT: The Comets play host to Mentor Tuesday, host Nordonia Wednesday and take on Twinsburg at Gleneagles Thursday.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The Lady Comet netters dropped a 4-1 decision to a strong CVCA team. The doubles team of Daisy Chung and Danielle Pivovar came away with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win.

UP NEXT: Solon is back on the courts Monday at Mentor before three straight home matches with Stow on Tuesday, Medina on Wednesday and Aurora on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Solon defeated Lakewood in a wild match as the Lady Comets prevailed by scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22.
