Solon Sports Recap: Soccer, Golf, Cross-Country, Volleyball

The Solon Sports Recap is a weekly look at sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports you need.

Solon's fall sports teams continue to shine, led by the unbeaten girls soccer team, the red-hot boys golf team and the boys  and girls cross country teams, which are poised to make a move in Mentor tomorrow.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Lady Comets earned a spot in the this week by virtue of a tie against 19th-ranked Walsh Jesuit earlier in the season. Solon then went out and edged 45th-ranked Medina by a 2-1 score to remain unbeaten at 3-0-1 on the season.

Natalia Kontul scored the game-winner aganst Medina while teammate Natalie Ockunzzi also scored. Goalkeeper Kristen Confroy came up with seven saves for Solon.

The Lady Comets blasted Madison 10-0 earlier in the week as Jordan Spiegle netted three goals. Also scoring for Solon were Maria Collica, Maddie Kresevic, Hannah Schippers, Kontul, Confroy, Barbara Kozlov and Lauren Ferguson. Confroy and Kozlov joined forces in goal to earn the shutout.

UP NEXT: Solon will play host to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney Saturday and will hit the road to play at Parma Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER

The Comets battled Mayfield to a 1-1 deadlock in a defensive struggle. Solon trailed 1-0 before tying the game on a penalty kick by Jay Seetharaman. Tommy Koenig had a strong game in goal with seven saves.

The Comets dropped a 3-1 match to unbeaten Chagrin Falls. Orlando Cumberlander had the lone goal for Solon while Koenig made four saves in goal.

UP NEXT: Solon takes its 2-1-1 record to Brecksville-Broadview Heights Saturday.

BOYS GOLF

It was a big week for the Comets, who picked up four wins against just one loss. Solon shot its lowest score of the season in a 154-174 win over Twinsburg at Grantwood with Sam Littman's round of 37 taking medalist honors. Justin Razzante carded a 38, David Rudary shot 39 and Jim Tornatore finished with a 40 for the winners.

David Rudary's low round of 36 sparked the Comets (160) to victories over Gilmour (164), Chagrin Falls (165) and NDCL (168) at Legend Lake. Tornatore posted a 39 while Eric Rudary added a 41.

Solon's lone loss of the week was a narrow 163-166 setback to Mentor at Blackbrook. Tornatore shot a 36 while David Rudary added a round of 41.

UP NEXT: The Comets host Stow Tuesday and play at Cuyahoga Falls Thursday afternoon.

GIRLS GOLF

Solon's girls have been posting some low scores against tough competition on their way to a 5-3 overall mark and 1-3 NOC record. Alexis Gray and teammate Tiffany Li shared medalist honors with rounds of 44 as the Lady Comets (182) bested Laurel (201) and Aurora (230). Aly Ales chipped in with a 45 and Grace Gutierrez added a 49 for the winners.

Gray shot a 40 and Ales contributed a 41 in a 166-173 loss to Medina at Shale Creek. Li finished with a round of 44 and Gutierrez added a 48.

Solon dropped a 169-185 decision to Strongsville despite a round of 40 from Ales. Gutierrez shot a 47 while Gray posted a 49 and Leah Wilson added a 58.

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets host Hudson, Walsh Jesuit and Hathaway Brown Tuesday before entertaining Hudson in conference action Wednesday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Solon placed third at the competitive GlenOak Invitational to open the season. Dan Urbanek had the top time for the Comets as his 17:04.32 clocking gained him an eighth place finish. Urbanek was followed across the finish line by teammates Kevin Blank (14th - 17:21.13), Eric Hansen (26th - 17:38.04), John Riordan (31st - 17:48.69) and Grant Behnke (38th - 17:54.00).

UP NEXT: Solon will be one of the top teams at Saturday's Mentor Cardinal Classic meet.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The Lady Comets' All-Ohio runner Therese Haiss won the indivdidual competition at the GlenOak Invitational, besting the field with a 19:15 clocking. Solon was second as a team as Kelsey Aamoth finished fifth (20:10.45), Geneva Sandridge was 22nd (21:22.29), Abby Paige placed 33rd (22:07.62) and Julia Haiss was 37th (22:15.96).

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets run at the Mentor Cardinal Classic tomorrow.

GIRLS TENNIS

Solon dropped two of three matches this week as the team's schedule got tougher. The Lady Comets fell to Laurel 3-2 despite wins from Jamie Marks (6-2, 6-1) and the doubles duo of Hailey Baird and Lisa Guo (6-3, 6-2).

The doubles team of Daisy Chung and Danielle Pivovar scored a 6-1, 6-3 victory in a 4-1 setback to Orange. Solon dropped a pair of three-set decisions in the hotly contested match.

The Lady Comets shut out Strongsville 5-0, picking up wins from Marks (6-1, 6-2), Chung (6-1, 6-0), Alana Fayman (6-1, 6-1) and the doubles teams of Tinisee Kandakai and Pivovar (6-1, 6-0) and Baird-Guo (3-6, 6-0, 6-3).

UP NEXT: Solon will play at CVCA Tuesday, host Stow Wednesday and entertain Gilmour Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Solon's girls opened the season at the Hudson Quad Meet and scored wins over Highland (25-12, 25-16) and Hudson (25-11, 25-18). The Lady Comets fell to a strong Jackson team by scores of 25-23, 16-25 and 25-17.

Solon dropped a 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 decision to Stow to fall to 2-2 overall on the season.

UP NEXT: The Lady Comets play host to Lakewood Tuesday night and will play at Strongsville Thursday evening.
