Golfer Rudary Heats Up, Volleyball Winning, Girls' Soccer Rebounds: Sports Recap

The Solon Sports Recap is a weekly look at  sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports coverage you need.

BOYS' GOLF

Solon's Dave Rudary is playing his best golf of the season as the Comet senior shot three superb rounds in three victories this week.  Solon bested Mentor 167-169 as Rudary carded a round of even-par 35. Anthony Stames added a 42, Justin Razzante shot 45 and Eric Rudary aided the cause with a 46.

Rudary topped that effort with a round of one-under par 34 in a 156-161 win over Nordonia. Stames also broke 40 as he shot a 39 while Razzante finished at 41 and Sam Littman posted a 42. Rudary, averaging 39 strokes per nine holes this season, shot his second 35 of the week in a 166-176 win over Twinsburg with Jim Tornatore carding a 41 and Razzante, Stames and Eric Rudary shooting 45s.

"David is having a great season and he has the potential to go far in the tournament," said Comet coach Jeff Aker.

UP NEXT: Solon plays at Stow Tuesday and at Avon Lake Wednesday before returning home to Grantwood to take on Kenston Thursday afternoon.

VOLLEYBALL

Solon defeated Brunswick 3-1 to improve to 4-3 overall on the season. Kristi Tekavec and Chelsey Tekavec are leading the Comet girls in kills, Monica Chehade is tops in assists, Kaylee Kruse leads in digs and Kelsey Ansec is the top blocker.

UP NEXT: Solon entertains North Royalton Tuesday and hits the road to play at Elyria Thursday night.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Solon lost for the first time this season in a 1-0 setback to Brecksville, but the young Lady Comets bounced back with an impressive 2-0 victory over rival Twinsburg. Freshman Emily Russell and junior Hannah Schippers each scored in the triumph over the Lady Tigers as Solon improved to 6-1-1 overall on the season.

"Our kids took the loss very hard but it's a super group of young ladies and they came out strong and beat Twinsburg," said head coach Dave FitzGerald. "I don't think Twinsburg had a shot on goal in the second half."

Kristen Confroy picked up the shutout in goal against the Tiger girls. Russell and Schippers, who are cousins, lead the Lady Comets in scoring with six goals each. The match against Brecksville pitted two ESPN Fab 50 teams against each other – Solon was ranked 14th while the Lady Bees were ranked 27th.

UP NEXT: Solon hosts Aurora Monday and will entertain Cuyahoga Falls Wednesday.

BOYS' SOCCER

The Comets played crosstown rival Twinsburg to a in a matchup of two of the top teams in Northeast Ohio. Solon goalkeeper Tommy Koenig kept the Tigers from scoring in The Battle of Route 91 while Foster King and Drew Schneir came up with standout efforts on defense.

Orlando Cumberlander, Matt Pekarek and Kyle Kerner all booted home goals in the Comets' 3-1 victory over Shaker Heights. Koenig came up with six saves for the winners.

UP NEXT: Solon takes a 4-1-2 overall mark into tomorrow afternoon's contest at St. Edward. The Comets have home matches with Medina Tuesday and North Royalton Thursday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Solon's boys were third overall at the Walsh Jesuit Tomahawk Run while the Lady Comets ran fourth in a competitive field.

Max Haiss led the boys' team with a ninth place finish in a time of 17:12. Also scoring for the Comets were Kevin Blank (12th - 17:18), John Riordan (19th - 17:35), Eric Hansen (28th - 17:52) and Ethan Wise (36th - 18:01).

Therese Haiss continued her standout season for the girls as she won the ladies' race with a 19:48 clocking. Kelsey Aamoth was right behind in third place at 19:56 and was followed across the finish line by teammates Julia Haiss (35th - 22:00), Alyssa Hatteberg (22:24) and Hayley Guggenheim (45th - 22:30).

UP NEXT: Solon will run at the Strongsville Invitational tomorrow.

GIRLS' GOLF

Aly Ales shot a medalist score of 39 to lead Solon to wins over North Royalton and Brunswick. Tiffany Li carded a 42, Alexis Gray shot 47 and Leah Wilson added a 49 for the winners.

Gray had the team's low round of 44 in a 167-191 setback to Strongsville. Wilson shot 48, Li had a 49 and Ales came in with a 50. The Lady Comets placed 10th at the Turkeyfoot Tournament with Gray (87) and Ales (89) both breaking 90.

UP NEXT: Solon, 4-4 in the NOC Valley Division and 9-6 overall, plays host to Medina Monday and plays at Hudson Wednesday.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The Lady Comet netters bested Medina 4-1, getting wins from Jamie Marks (6-2, 6-2) and Alana Fayman (6-1, 6-2) at singles and the doubles teams of Daisy Chung-Danielle Pivovar (4-6, 7-6, 6-4) and Hailey Baird-Lisa Guo (6-3, 6-0).

UP NEXT: Solon hosts Highland this afternoon and has home matches against Elyria Catholic Monday and Hudson Wednesday before playing at Chagrin Falls Thursday.
