Comets Win! Solon Rallies in Second Half, Overtime to Beat Twinsburg 27-21

Here's one way for the Solon Comets to stop feeling sorry for themselves: Come from behind and defeat your rival in overtime.

The Solon Comets defeated the Twinsburg Tigers in a 27-21 thriller after Nick Davidson ran for a 20 yard touchdown in overtime. The win propels the Comets to 7-1. The Tigers fall to 5-3.

Behind 14-0 at halftime and playing poorly against an inspired Twinsburg squad, Senior Quarterback Pat Kramer rallied the troops, throwing three touchdown passes to a wide receiver corps with ice in its veins.

Cory Stuart caught two, including a 67-yard bomb. And Darian Hicks caught a 14 yard touchdown pass with no time left to send the game to overtime at 21-21.

Then Solon's defense forced Twinsburg into a field goal attempt in overtime, which was no good after it defelected off the left goal post.

Solon took over at the 20 and Davidson, a captain more known for his defense than his offense, took a handoff at the 20 yard line and ran it in for the winning score. His teammates mobbed him behind the endzone.

"He's one of our captains," said Coach Jim McQuaide. "I'm not surprised at all that he made a play like that."

Twinsburg Coach Joe Schiavone said he was proud of the way his players performed.

""I was extremely proud of how hard they fought," he said. "Our kids have done that all year. Regardless of the outcome, our kids play hard all four quarters."

"They had one more play than we'd like," he added.

McQuaide said that his players were clearly feeling sorry for themselves after losing to Mentor last week, a rare regular season loss for the Comets, and it carried over into the first half.

"We just needed to play better," he said. "We were feeling sorry for ourselves in practice this week. That's not how you play in a rivalry game."

Surrounded by his jubilant players after the game, McQuaide joked that when he was 90 years old and watching future generations of Comets playing football, he'll still be repeating the mantra that won Solon the game.

"There's always enough time!" he shouted to Comet cheers.
