The Solon Comets boys’ soccer team travelled South the take on state ranked Medina Bees on Tuesday night and clawed their way back to earn a 1-1 tie.

With few shots on goal by either team in the opening forty minutes, the half ended scoreless. In the second half, just as the sky opened up and drenched the stadium with rain, Medina scored first about 7 minutes in.

About halfway through the second half, the Comets drew a free kick. Senior defender Foster King lofted the ball into the center of the goalie box where Junior Scotty Welker was waiting with his back to the goal to put a header to the left of the goalie for an equalizing score.

Solon did have more opportunities late in the game, but a questionable offside call against the Comets nullified a breakaway opportunity.

The varsity record now stands at 6-1-3.

The JV Squad lost to Medina earlier in the evening 2-1. Max Shulman scored for the Comets.

Late last week, the team traveled to North Royalton on Sept. 13 and won 2-1.

The Comets struck first as junior Welker connected on a penalty kick to carry a 1-0 lead into the half. North Royalton answered with a PK goal of their own, but the Comets were able to hang on as Welker scored for a second time and the defense held to preserve the win.

After the Solon Homecoming weekend, the Comets will host Mentor at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24 night at Stewart Field. JV plays at 5 p.m.
