Speech and Debate Competes at Yale University in First Tournament of the Season

Seven members of the Speech and Debate team competed at the Yale University National Invitational prior to the regular tournament season.

The SHS Speech and Debate Team kicked off its 2012-2013 season at Yale University's National Invitational Tournament this past weekend. It was the first national tournament ever attended by the team outside of the NFL National Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season and will set the precedent for excursions to come. Thousands of competitors from across the country convened to compete at Yale's scenic campus, and the Solon members spent time enjoying a tour of the school as well as an inside view from former member and Yale freshman Yuxi Liu. After competing for five rounds on Saturday, juniors London Christian and Eric Wang were ranked in the top 24 competitors in their event and continue to compete on Sunday.

Eric was a quarter-finalist in International Extemproraneous Speaking and London competed throught the final round of Dramatic Interpretation, winning 5th place overall at the tournament. Congratulations to both of them as well as the other five members who participated, juniors Edwin Zhang and Crystal Kong and seniors Liz Eder, Nisha Malhotra, and Ojas Sathe.

The team's next tournament will not be until the advent of the regular season at Rocky River High School on October 27th. Go SC!
