Parkside Elementary Will Have Half-Day Friday For Martha Keeney's Funeral

Superintendent Joe Regano said the half day will allow people associated with Parkside Elementary to attend Martha Keeney's funeral.

Parkside Elementary will have a half-day of school on Friday so people associated with the school can attend Martha Keeney's funeral service.

Superintendent Joe Regano announced the decision in a note to parents:

The loss of a principal is unchartered waters for us in Solon. We have thought long and hard about the best way to address the need for so many people associated with Parkside to attend Mrs. Keeney’s funeral services on Friday. After much reflection, we have decided to have just a half day of school at Parkside on Friday to enable staff and families who were close to Mrs. Keeney to be able to attend the services at 11 on Friday. This was not an easy decision but it seems to be the right decision.

We will dismiss students at 10:20 a.m. on Friday and their teachers will assist them in boarding the busses just like a regular afternoon dismissal. The busses will run their regular routes so parents should anticipate students arriving at their normal Friday drop-off points beginning just after 10:30 a.m.

If your child attends an after-school day care program or after-school activity, please check with the facility staff to ensure that a morning arrival time is acceptable. It is possible that some programs may be unable or not open in the morning to accept students, such as the Pond, Blue Moon or the Arts Center. Your child’s safety is our priority so we want to be certain that you make arrangements ensuring that your child’s after-school care provider is ready to accept your child shortly after 10:30 a.m. If your regular Friday after-school provider is unable to accommodate your child on Friday morning, please notify the office in writing detailing where your child will be going after school. If you or another caregiver will pick up your child at the 10:20 dismissal time, the regular procedures for notifying the school office in advance for parent pick up must be followed. Thank you for your help and cooperation in arranging to meet your students as they arrive home early on Friday.

Keeney passed away on Sunday after a long battle with colon cancer.

Calling hours for Keeney are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Church of the Holy Angels, 18205 Chillicothe Road, in Chagrin Falls.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m., at Church of the Holy Angels.
