John A. Major, Former Solon Schools Superintendent, Dies at 94

He served as superintendent from 1951-68, then served six more years as the school district's business manager

John A. Major, former superintendent and business manager for the , died Monday, July 11, at his home in Solon at age 94.

He served as superintendent of the school system from 1951-1968. He continued serving the schools as business manager until retiring in 1974.

The Solon Chamber of Commerce inducted Major into its Hall of Fame in 1992 in recognition of his contributions to the city of Solon.

Major, who was born in Belmont County in southeastern Ohio, graduated from Ohio Northern University in Ada. He served in the Navy during World War II.

Following his military service, he continued his studies at Columbia University, where he earned a master’s degree.

Major lived in Solon since 1949.

His wife of 69 years, Ione (nee House), died in 2009.

Major is survived by his children, Deborah (Dave) Hill and Mary Jo (John) Molinaro; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 15, at , 33375 Bainbridge Road, where services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16.
