Hands-On Science at Solon's Parkside Elementary

Parkside Elementary School students treated to a day of experiments to teach them about the human body

"How many of you went and talked about fat in your food?" Christine Barnett asked a group of attentive students at Solon's Parkside Elementary School this week. "Do you want a lot of fat in your food, or a little bit of fat?"

The correct answer, of course, is a little bit. And students at Parkside got to participate in some hands-on experiments that had to deal with not only fat and diet, but a host of other matters involving the human body.

The day of scientific inquiry was brought to the school courtesy of COSI, the Columbus-based Center of Science and Industry, which brings a science program to the schools in Solon each year, said Tammy Strom, a schools spokeswoman.

While this year's theme was the human body, more important than the individual themes are the fact that kids are exposed to the scientific method.

"The process of what they are doing is the important thing," Strom said. "Those are the things that carry through to any grade level."

It's good for parents too, who volunteered to work the experiments and received training by COSI, Strom said.
