Solon to Unveil Engraved Monuments at Veterans Day Ceremony

The city will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial to unveil the monuments engraved with the names of Solon's fallen veterans.

Last year, the city of Solon honored veterans by opening a new memorial park in the center of town on Veterans Day.

This year, Solon will unveil newly engraved monument stones containing the names of Solon residents who gave their life in the military.

The city will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at the Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of SOM Center Road and Bainbridge Road. During the ceremony the city will unveil the monuments for each military service branch containing the names of Solon residents who died fighting America's wars.

The city will also unveil pavers with names of Solon residents who served in the military.

The ceremony will remember the fallen heroes by reading the names of those Solonites who died and those who served.

Mayor Susan Drucker and Jack Tesmer, the Commander of Solon's VFW Post 1863, wrote a letter inviting residents to the ceremony.

"It is an opportunity for us, as a community, to show how much we appreciate our veterans for the dedication to our country and the honor they have brought to our nation," the letter reads.

Earlier this year, with how to honor Solon veterans at the memorial and eventually agreed to a policy to engrave the names of the fallen on the service markers and the names of veterans who served but survived on the pavers.

DO YOU KNOW A SOLON VETERAN WHO SHOULD BE HONORED? The city is from veterans and family members of veterans who want to have their name on the memorial. Applications will be processed each year, and must be received by Aug. 31 to be eligible for that year's Veterans Day celebration.

Under the city's policy, Solon veterans who died during service are eligible to have their name carved into the memorial stone for their service branch. Surviving veterans who lived in Solon either before or after their service are eligible to have their name engraved into the memorial walkway at the monument.Β 

The veteran or family member seeking to have a name engraved must provide proof of the veteran's Solon residency and service history.
