Previous Political Office Sought or Held: I have been elected to the Solon Board of Education for two consecutive four-year terms.

Candidate Statement: I have spent the past 25 years actively involved in the Solon Schools. As a parent volunteer, PTA leader, Levy/Bond Chairperson and most recently, a two-term member of the Solon Board of Education, I have committed my time and talents to ensure the Solon Schools achieve our strategic mission, by continuing to provide the best public education possible—for every student, every day.   Our residents value and take great pride in the fact that the Solon City Schools are consistently one of highest performing districts in the state.  I am currently serving as Board President and believe my experience, proven leadership skills and unwavering commitment uniquely qualifies me to represent the citizens of Solon and Glenwillow, for another four years.

The Solon City Schools face a number of financial challenges.  The education funding formula in Ohio is in a continuous state of change and does not provide for a dependable, long-term model that schools can rely on.  One major concern is the real threat that legislative changes will alter the Tangible Personal Property (TPP) reimbursement to schools.

Last spring, the Governor’s budget proposal called for the phase-out and eventual elimination of the TPP reimbursement.  If implemented, this would have presented a serious threat to the financial stability of the Solon Schools.  Under the leadership and direction of the Board of Education, our Superintendent and Treasurer took proactive steps to prepare for and address this serious concern.  Months of discussion and planning resulted in the creation of the CFFO (Coalition for Fiscal Fairness in Ohio).  When called upon, this statewide group was fully operational and prepared to spring into action.  The end result was a well-organized grass roots effort that successfully lobbied state legislators, to make substantive changes in the Governor’s budget proposal.  The agreement was a major victory for those districts seriously impacted by the elimination of TPP reimbursements.  Solon/Glenwillow residents, city government, the local Chamber of Commerce and our school district worked collaboratively and can take great pride in their efforts to influence this positive outcome.

As board president, I was actively involved in this process, ultimately testifying before the House Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education.  If re-elected I will continue that level of involvement with our local/state legislators in an effort to hold them accountable.  This discussion is far from over and we must aggressively monitor legislative activity in Columbus.  An experienced, consensus-building Board of Education will be invaluable as we move forward to face the challenges of the next four years!
