Solon Police Working on Deal to House Prisoners from Orange

The proposed two-year agreement would pay the city $75 per day per prisoner

The Solon Police Department is working on an agreement with the Village of Orange to house their prisoners, a move that will add another revenue stream for the jail.

Police Chief Chris Viland said he has been working on the deal since February.

The proposed two-year deal says Orange will pay Solon $75 per prisoner per day.Β

Viland said he has been pursing "cost-effective" ways to operate the jail since he took over as police chief earlier this year. One way to do that is to increase revenue streams by bringing in more outside prisoners.

Solon already contracts with Shaker Heights, Bentleyville and Woodmere.Β

Viland told the safety committee this week that he is in discussion with two other organizations interested in contracting with the jail.

Not many communities have a full-service jail. Others include Euclid and Bedford Heights.
