Solon City Council Quick Takes: Deer Legislation, Solar Center Moratorium and More

Here are the quick hits you need to know about action and discussion from Monday night's council meeting

The Solon City Council met Monday night and discussed a number of big issues confronting the city. Here is a quick recap of what happened:

Deer Legislation Being Prepared: City Council members voted 6-1 to prepare legislation for a deer management plan based on the recommended comprehensive plan brought forward by the safety committee.

But looming over discussions of culling Solon's growing deer herd is the ballot initiative that would outlaw hunting in Solon.Β

Development Moratorium on Solar Center Property: After nearly an hour of executive session discussions, city council emerged and unanimously approved a temporary nine-month development moratorium on the Solar Center property.

The only exception is if the shopping center, which contains Solon's Giant Eagle, is developed according to project development agreement already on file with the city.

The reason for the sudden action was that the city recently discovered that the companies involved in the Solar Center redevelopment are entangled in a lawsuit that could jeopardize the development agreement. City Council members said they took the action to protect the interests of the city and ensure that important commercial property is developed based on the city's vision.

Ward Redistricting: The Ward Redistricting Committee will meet once more before the next city council meeting Aug. 15 in order to review a proposal brought forward by Councilmen Rick Bell and Bob Pelunis. Their proposal tweaks the recommended map presented by the committee.
