Northeast Ohio Conservatives Rally Around Josh Mandel

Republican voters at a rally in Solon say GOP U.S. Senate candidate Josh Mandel is the polar opposite of his opponent, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown and President Barack Obama.

Joy and Lowell Wolfe say they didn't become politically active until Barack Obama was elected to the White House.

Since then, the couple from Geauga County has volunteered for Republican causes, including working to repeal the new health care law. They want to kick Obama out of office, and send Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown packing too. They see Brown as walking in lock-step with the president.

"When people of Ohio had differences with the president, Sherrod Brown cast his vote with the president," said Lowell Wolfe.

Enter Josh Mandel.

Mandel is challenging Brown for his Senate seat. Currently Ohio's treasurer, Mandel has energized voters like the Wolfes who make up the Republican base.

The Wolfes and roughly 200 other votes came to the on Tuesday night to hear Mandel speak to a crowd of supporters.

These voters, all staunch supporters of Mandel's candidady, said he is a credible and exciting opponent to the Democratic incumbent, one they think could make inroads in Cuyahoga County, traditionally a Democratic stronghold.

"He's a valid candidate and challenger to Sen. Brown," said Dennis Tidmore, president of the Southeast Republican Club, which hosted Mandel's rally in Solon. "He's diametrically opposed to what Brown stands for."

"Ohio is a swing state, one of the seven or eight states that are pivotal," he added. "If Republicans are galvanized and get out the vote and hit the streets and motivate others, so goes the nation."

During his speech, Mandel said Brown is a good person who loves his country but that the two men "just have a different idea of where we want to take this country" on issues such as health care and job creation.

"We're going to win it by going eyeball to eyeball, and gatherings just like this, and convincing people that the policy ideas and the vision for the country that I see, for which I fight, will take our nation, our state and our families in a much better direction," Mandel said.

The Mandel-versus-Brown tilt is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing races in the country. That's clear to anyone who's watched their television in recent weeks, as the money flows in and candidates and outside groups pummel each other with advertising. The contest will likely be the most expensive in Ohio history.

Joy Wolfe said Mandel is an honest candidate who she believes wants what's best for Ohioans.

"I think it's very important to have somebody responsible and who will work to improve our lives," she said. "Brown is too far left for me, so I'm interested to see how far Mandel's going to go."

Sherrod Brown has been in politics for 38 years and in Washington for over a decade.
If he was part of the solution, he would have accomplished something by now. Josh Mandel will NOT just vote the party line -- if you got to know him, you would realize that. I feel his youth and outside-of-Washington thinking will be an asset. We need more like him.

that'd be a good start.

HI Adam, right you are, but please look at the stats about the future of Ohio. Having relocated here for a job recently (health care is one of the few growth industries in Ohio), it was very depressing to see that more young people are leaving this state than moving in. And one of the huge reasons this state is on a decline is that it is now nationally perceived as being relatively intolerant, biased, conservative/right wing religious dominated, and not forward thinking. With the passage of the Ohio Health Care Amendment, the backward thinking citizens of Ohio were able to continue this impression nationally that Ohio is now not a progressive/21st century state but one that is clearly repressive and focused on wanting to have government control people's lives/choices than on government trying to solve the multiple of problems that Ohio faces. Sorry folks on this blog, but just quoting the facts from the recent 2010 census: Cleveland lost 17% of its population; Cincinnati, Toledo, Youngstown, Dayton and Akron all suffered huge population declines. Ohio lost two US House seats. The downward decline will continue and combined now with a regressive govenmental environment, increasing older population who are retired, and famously harsh winter and short humid summers, who under 35 would want to move here? Yet these are the folks who have incomes and pay taxes! So I guess Adam, Ohio will reap what it so foolishly has sowed!

MSNBC has admitted in their recent split from Microsoft that they are a liberal channel, with the goal of offsetting the conservative Fox news. So anyone who's out there thinking MSNBC is a non-partisan news source should wake up.
Factcheck.org -- it's a wonderful website that provides actual facts and debunks much of what you hear in the news and on the political ads. It's non-partisan you get the real story. Anyone reading it will see that clearly there's a lot of misinformation out there, which is what they want.

Hi Adam, hope you have a chance to read a couple books that help to explain the direction this country has already moved to - except here in Ohio! -
Richard Florida's BEYOND MASS PRODUCTION and also by Florida THE RISE OF THE CREATIVE CLASS. There are many reasons innovative 21st century businesses and those who want to work in them are having great success in places like Chicago, NYC, SF, LA, Seattle, Austin, Denver, Madison. With close to 25% of all working Americans - over 40 million - now employed in these 21st businesses if Ohio is to survive as an economic state, it has to start to think 21st century and not 20th century. And a lot of that thinking will be in direct contrast to what the state leadership now advocating/legislating, such as the ridiculous out of step Ohio Health Care Amendment. Ohio needs to advocate for innovation, tolerance, technology in the new workplace or face total economic disaster.
Paxton Crenshaw July 19, 2012 at 02:02 pm
they are certainly partisan - but they are also quite accurate.

media bias only goes one way in your mind. I already knew that, just wanted you to admit to that.

Wrong. Many Conservatives became active after Obama was in office because his skin is black, not because they felt he was purposely ruining the country you/we love. Bush did a good job at ruining the country long before Obama took office, why aren't you going after him as well? Because his skin is white, perhaps?
The amount of hatred & derogatory remarks that have been directed at Barack & Michelle Obama, since entered the White House, is disgusting & shameful. Vile filthy remarks that would never be said about a white president & white first lady, even if they brought the country to a standstill. It also proves that a great many Americans, probably you included, never moved past the days of slavery.

The first item in your list is extremely troubling. I have a hard time describing Protect IP as a "success" and/or an "accomplishment" when it would have permitted the rampant destruction of the free and open internet we currently enjoy. It was a terrible idea, and I was disappointed to learn that, partisanship aside, a Senator from Ohio could be so ignorant and blind as to the true effects of the legislation.
Adam C. Miller July 19, 2012 at 05:13 pm
Nobody wants PIPA, SOPA, COICA, CISPA, or whatever bill our goverment needs to regulate and control us/internet... The USA PATRIOT Act (and Domestic Security Enhancement Act) is bad enough... Less Government. More Freedom.
ian king July 19, 2012 at 05:35 pm
Hi Adam, and I suppose you believe that the banking industry should not be regulated also? Maybe you are one of the lucky ones, but almost everyone I know has lost several thousand of dollars in not only savings accounts, MMA accounts, and equity in their homes due to the elimination of many banking regulations. Even Alan Greenspan has been "shocked" by the real world abuses and often illegal risks banks/investment firms have participated in - at a loss of trillions around the world. So I guess Adam, is less government with more freedom for industries like the financial one, still a good thing for us common folks?
ian king July 19, 2012 at 05:51 pm
Hi Adam, please don't confuse quantity with quality...............Brown has an impressive record whether you like it or not. He has been productive during his years of service. So please don't associate experience with lack of quality - in the case of Brown, it is just not true. Believe the facts pleaaaase!
ian king July 19, 2012 at 06:03 pm
Hi Jim, I disagree. The Protect IP Act was one of the only bipartisan supported bills of recent note. Conservative groups such as the US Chamber of Commerce, came together with Progressive groups such as the AFL-CIO to support copyright/intellectual property right and to shut down rogue sites. A lot of misinformation was out there about this bill and how it would limit noble causes such as freedom of speech, but that just was not true. If you read the legislation there is nothing in there about limiting freedom of speech or censorship. If anything, the bill was too vague and should have been more specific. However, something needs to be done about copyright protection on the net as a lot of disinformation/ false facts/piracy are epidemic on the net today. A recent study indicated that over 50% of so called "facts" posted on the net are just not true facts. One of the goals of this bill was to at least gain some control of one's own intellectual property and copyright. Isn't that what American business practice/policy is all about - protecting one's own property against falsehoods/misuse/ and plagarisms?
Adam C. Miller July 19, 2012 at 08:43 pm
CLEARLY, I was talking about Civil Liberties and Civil Rights violations... NOT the financial industry. Nice diversion! Stay on topic lol
Adam C. Miller July 19, 2012 at 08:51 pm
@Ian - Do some research on Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation)... they owned 50% America's mortgage market, which led to the sub-prime mortgage crisis #Government
But I'm sure you already knew that...
ian king July 19, 2012 at 09:59 pm
Hi Adam - your kinda Tea Party analysis/slogan that "less government = more freedom" has been proven for several decades now to be just a bit too simplistic for life in America in the 21st century - wouldn't you agree?
Ben Dover July 20, 2012 at 12:29 am
Are you taking about President Obama
Adam C. Miller July 20, 2012 at 12:57 am
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac causing your friends to lose money has NOTHING to do with the 'Tea Party'...
l. frazier July 23, 2012 at 12:49 am
No need to clutter-up the Nov. voting decisions; there are two alternatives: good ol' American Capitalism with Josh Mandel and Mittens Romney, or Pres. Obama and Sen. Sherrod Brown's demonstrated anti-American Socialism Experiment. Everything else is political smoke and mirrors this time around.
AMA July 23, 2012 at 03:31 am
Changing boundaries to prevent US citizens to vote,
Not producing tax returns Supporting war type weapons allowed to be sold to citizens Hiding bank accounts off shore to avoid paying taxes Lying, cheating middle America and supporting big business free of taxes.. Now THAT'S ANTI AMERICAN! Don't ya think?
ian king July 23, 2012 at 07:13 am
Hi Adam, I do luv how you take my written comments/thoughts out of context! Perhaps purposeful selectivity to make your own weak points stand out more???
My point/comment was that the Tea Party represents the most simplistic approach to solving very complex problems today in USA. The operational systems/policies of Fannie and Freddie Mac are of course, linked to banking and the mortgage industries. I guess the complexities of it all may be a bit too much for those Tea Party/Fox News devotees out there! LOL
ian king July 23, 2012 at 07:17 am
Hi L. Frazier - I think you lost something in the interpretation.
it should be: too ambitious Mandel and very retro Romney represent your voting for Tax Bias Socialism for the Rich, while Pres. Obama and Senator Brown represent your voting for an America that is Tax Fairness for everyone else!
Adam C. Miller July 23, 2012 at 07:38 am
So Fannie and Freddie aren't government sponsored entities?
Adam C. Miller July 23, 2012 at 07:44 am
Was the Granai airstrike un-American?

To Guy Thomas: You Sir, are an absolute idiot. Have you ever heard of spell check? I digress. Have you ever taken a course on the language that I assume you would ardently argue is our country's "main language"? I would ask if you have ever taken a grammar course...but I don't want you to spend too much time trying to google "grammar".
