Neil Armstrong: Flags At Half-Staff To Honor First Man on the Moon

President Obama issued a Half Staff Proclamation in memory of Ohio native, astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

In Ohio, per Gov. John Kasich's Proclamation, the flag will remain at half staff until sunset on Friday, Aug. 31.

Armstrong died on Aug. 25 at the age of 82.

Armstrong, the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, made history on July 20, 1969. Hours after landing, he took his first step on the mission that essentially ended the Soviet-American space race in the 1960s.

President Obama issued the proclamation on Monday.

“As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day,” the proclamation said.
