Solon Infrastructure Fund Nearly $1.3 Million Short

List of 19 priority projects would cost an expected $7.6 million. Infrastructure fund expected to only have $6.36 million available for 2011 projects

Solon City Council's public works and finance committees want to move forward on a list of 19 infrastructure projects expected to cost $7.6 million in 2011.

The infrastructure fund, however, only has $6.36 million available to fund the projects, according to the project list. The plan, approved by both committees, is to have finance director Bill Weber recommend a way to fill the gap if needed, possibly by using money from the city's general fund.

The project list will be finalized when city council approves the annual budget appropriations later this month.

The top-priority projects for this year include improvements to the Briar Hill Lake, an important piece of the city's overall stormwater management plan. That project was delayed from last year because of permitting snags. It's expected to cost the city $1.16 million.

Other projects include improvements to the intersection at Carter Street and Cochran Road. The project will add a left turn lane on Cochran road onto Carter Street. The project is expected to cost nearly $1.9 million, but state and county funds are being used, so the city share is about $1.3 million.

Also included on the list is a citywide traffic signal upgrade, which the city will contribute a total of $1.5 million toward, with $750,000 being spent in 2011.

According to the , the infrastructure fund will be fed with about $9 million in income tax proceeds, adding to a carryover balance from last year of about $688,000. But the city does have encumbrances of about $3.4 million from 2010 projects.Β
