DOMA Ruling Declares Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

Supreme Court rules that Defense of Marriage Act, which bans same-sex couples from marrying, is unconstitutional.

The Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law enacted in 1996 banning same-sex marriage, was struck down by the Supreme Court Wednesday morning, Reuters reports.

Under the ruling, same-sex married couples are entitled to the same federal benefits as opposite-sex married couples.

The law was signed under President Bill Clinton's administration, The Huffington Post adds, and the Justice Department defended it until 2011, despite the Obama administration's opposition.

But in 2011, the Justice Department stopped defending the law and declared it unconstitutional. Today the Supreme Court agreed.
