Census 2010: Solon Set to Begin Redrawing Ward Boundaries

The City Council has 180 days to reconfigure the ward using the new Census population counts

With new population figures in hand from the 2010 Census results, the Solon City Council will now begin the task of redrawing the city's seven wards.

Mayor Susan Drucker said the city charter gives the City Council 180 days to reconfigure the city into seven wards roughly equal in population. To do this, the city will form a committee with a member from each ward recommended by that ward's council member.

That committee will be appointed at the council's April 4 meeting.

If the council can't do the job in 180 days, it becomes the mayor's right to redraw the wards, according to the charter.

Solon grew in the last decade. According to the data, the overall population of Solon grew from 21,802 in 2000 to 23,348 in 2010, an increase of 7 percent.
